Android app developer Philly Android revealed a few stats about the uptake of his Tip Calculator app last week, proudly claiming it was the #1 Finance App on the Android Market and had been downloaded by an astonishing 350,000 users. He said…
“In the next week or two, I will be releasing version 1.2 of my Tip Calculator. This update will further solidify my standings in the Android Market, as well as make my application the be-all and end-all to tip calculators. I have been listening attentively to my users’ comments, and this new release will make a lot of folks happy!”
We can’t help but admire his correct use of the pluralised possessive apostrophe there. He is clearly an intelligent guy.
But honestly, do we really need an app for this sort of low-level maths? How hard is it to use your head to add ten percent onto your bill, or maybe 15 percent if the waitress was cute and overly attentive to your needs?
Motorola’s latest flagship dual-core Android monster is a massive, original powerhouse, that’s a big improvement on previous MOTOBLUR mobiles – but still isn’t a total winner.
A slim and glamorous phone from Sony Ericsson, with the sharpest display around. It’s no powerhouse and the screen’s not the biggest out there, but we don’t mind. Because it’s cute.
LG’s first glasses-free 3D phone is a heavy, fat monster, with a clever 3D effect that works rather well. As a smartphone, though, it’s heavy and underwhelming.
A very shiny thing from Sony Ericsson, with a 3.7″ screen and Android 2.3.3 inside. But is it exciting enough to win fans in today’s spec-obsessed market? Can man live on one core alone?
INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

While I agree that the task of calculating a tip is not terribly difficult, there are plenty of folks who may think differently. Whether out of convenience (or laziness!), more and more people are installing my little application every day.

I’m not really looking to make a profit from this, but if folks want to say thanks and help keep my out-of-pocket costs down for future applications, it’s always appreciated.
