The legendary HTC Hero Android phone helped ‘break’ Android in the UK – and in the US where operator Verizon rebadged and renamed it the HTC DROID ERIS – and is a dream to own and fiddle with. But what about the camera? Is it any good? What are the pictures LIKE?
This is what they’re like, courtesy of a staggeringly mundane road trip taken by the HTC Hero/ERIS reviewer appointed by Cool Smartphone. He was at home watching TV, then he drove along a motorway, then he arrived at a train station. It is a tear-jerking journey of life, love and personal discovery.
On occasions like this, we would prefer to use American photo samples. Is that Neighbours he’s watching? A man with a lounge this dated shouldn’t be trusted with reviewing cutting-edge technology.
Still, that’s a great shot produced by the Hero. It’s so good, you could even convince someone this was taken with a proper digital camera. Not a DSLR, but something cheap from Samsung. The HTC Hero is as good as a £69.99 Samsung digital camera. That’s some compliment.
Click on the photos to see the original, raw HTC Hero/ERIS pics. We give the Hero a 9/10 for photo quality, and we give Cool Smartphone’s reviewer a 2/10 for his photographic skills.
COULD IT REPLACE A PROPER CAMERA?
Yes, it could replace a cheap digital camera that’s old and needs replacing anyway.

The Hero has a much better focus than the other Android mobiles I’ve used (Magic and G1). It’s still a bit slow, but like you say I’m waiting for Google to sort that out in Android 2.0.
