Oh dear. The Archos 5, which on paper seems like an amazing idea thanks to squeezing Android OS onto the front of a wi-fi-enabled media player with a 4.8″ screen, has been given a right old bashing by geek-dad magazine Wired. Turns out it’s slow and a bit broken.
Here are a few quotes from Wired’s review, just in case you were thinking of picking up an Archos. Wired gave it a 5/10 which seems stunningly generous given the list of complaints…
- “Searching simply doesn’t work: The button you have to push to initiate a search is decidedly unpushable. So, finding apps means scrolling through lists”
- “During a few days of testing, applications hung, crashed or abruptly ended up with a garbled display more often than we could count”
- “Expect waits of up to 10 seconds for some button presses to register”
Here’s a photo of the Archos 5 media player, pictured during happier times:
Don’t buy one of these. Just get a massive SD card and make do with your phone. Or imagine films in your head to pass the time.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.
