OK, so tonight Google is going to officially announce the Nexus One, or there will be a lot of disappointed people on the planet if it only uses this evening’s Press Gathering to announce, say, more regional versions of Orkut.
Despite the fact the Nexus doesn’t even officially exist yet, that hasn’t stopped the UK mainstream media from going mad for Google’s Android phone – or at least trying to bag themselves some internet traffic by rewriting Engadget’s review without linking to it (that’s you, Daily Mail).
Here’s how the UK press is already going Nexus One MAD. No one has anything NEW to say about it, by the way. The blog-i-verse has totally set the agenda and led the way on breaking news of HTC and Google’s new mobile.
The Telegraph – “Early reviews suggest the Nexus camera, which comes with a flash, is preferred to that on the iPhone, and it is likely to win the battle over battery life”
The Daily Mail – “New reports suggest the Nexus One, named after a type of ‘replicant’ cyborg in Ridley Scott’s science-fiction film Blade Runner, will be sold online for around £300″
BBC – “Google has kept secret the exact details of what will be unveiled on 5 January. Media organisations are limited to sending one correspondent to the press conference. A spokesman for the company would only say the announcement was ‘significant’”
The Times – “The Nexus One’s unlocked version will allow consumers to use a supplier of their choice to provide wireless service. Google is thought to have already approached T-Mobile and Vodafone in the UK”
The Guardian – “Google hopes that it can get a foothold in the lucrative mobile phone market – and by doing so build links to hundreds of millions of people around the world, and use the information they can provide it”
And so it goes, the old dinosaurs pretending to be authorities on things they know nothing about. Incredibly, all this “mainstream” coverage is based on the old internet rumours, with no new facts or insights contained in any of the above.
We therefore expect a FULL MEDIA MELTDOWN when Google issues a proper press release and some nice photos of the Nexus later today, allowing the egos of these out-of-the-loop press journalists to be restored.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.
