HTC Magic / myTouch 3G will get Android 2.1 – by the middle of 2010

Hooray! News from HTC’s Canadian partner Roger’s Wireless has confirmed that HTC is expecting to update its Magic (AKA myTouch 3G) Android phone to the FULL Android 2.1 specification, with an update expected to arrive halfway through the year.

Roger’s confirmed that Canadian Magic and Dream users would soon get an updated version of Android 1.5 on their phones (but oddly this will NOT be Android 1.6) to keep them happy (ish), also adding that

“By mid-year, HTC will issue an upgrade to Android 2.1, including the highly acclaimed HTC Sense experience for the HTC Magic.”

…but there will be nothing beyond Android 1.5 for users of the Dream, AKA the T-Mobile G1. That phone is now officially last-gen, after a mere year on sale.

htc magic android update 2

We were a little worried that the HTC Magic – branded as a “With Google” phone on Vodafone in the UK and therefore possibly being left out in the update wilderness like the Samsung Galaxy i7500, might be considered too old to get Android 2.1 – but no. Once the HTC Sense UI is stripped away, the 2.1 Android build ought to quite easily filter down to all Magic/myTouch phones in the US, Europe and anywhere else HTC’s flogging it.

It looks like the Magic/myTouch’s impressive Android market share was enough to convince HTC to invest the man-hours required to update the phone’s current Android 1.6 version to the full 2.1 experience.

Everyone’s a bit busy flogging the Nexus, by the look of it. I’m just happy my Magic will make it to the end of its 18-month contract before becoming obsolete.

  4. The reason they are not upgrading the mytouch right now is becuase they want people tp purchase the Nexus now since its out. Sales for that phone is important to google. After they get a bunch off the shelves they will give mytouch the upgrade it deserves.
