We are a bit late with this. Sorry.
We’ve been guilty of ignoring the Android Market’s GAMES section for way too long, as we simply assumed everything on there was utter rubbish. But it isn’t – Lupis Labs‘ Robo Defense is AMAZING.
Literally the best mobile phone game we’ve yet played, Robo Defense is simple-yet-frantic strategy game, that has you plonking down and upgrading a series of weaponry to stop a constant stream of enemy ‘bots parading across your territory. That’s it. Away you. It starts off boring, but soon becomes the sort of game you have to stop playing well before bed time else you can’t stop thinking about it all night.
Robo Defense signals an astonishing first for us – it’s the first game or app we have PAID FOR. We’re still a bit excited by it all, even though the game itself has been “out” since early last year. And even if you’re a tight-arse, the free version will keep you hooked for literally hours. It’s unbelievably good.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ January 8, 2010Definitely a great game, and find it fascinating you called it ‘strategy’ rather than ‘tower defense’. It *is* a strategy game, but tower defense might get you some more search results or something (don’t know how the internet works, sorry). Looking forward to more good/bad games posts, I had a look a long time ago but most (well, all) were crap… hopefully this is changing!

/ January 8, 2010I’ve heard people call it “tower defence” but coming from a traditional console background, I’m not really sure what that means. There wasn’t much tower-defending to do on the Mega Drive.

/ January 9, 2010Oh, hell yeah. I’ve paid for a ton of games for my phone, and that’s still maybe my favorite, that and the free port of Gimme Friction Baby.
Oh, and tower defense games are games just like this – you see them a lot on the web, there are a bunch in the Xbox, PS3 and Wii markets, and they’re pretty standard on portables. First games to show up are solitaire, Galaga clones, and tower defense games, pretty much.
Retro Defense is also a lot of fun and brilliantly designed to be vaguely Tron-like, BTW.
