We are very happy to endorse new fuel-price-tracking Android app WhatGas Petrol Prices, as the developer is giving it away for free. The most well-known and high-profile (UK-focused) alternative is Fuel Prices UK provided by Mubaloo – which wants you to pay a ludicrous £4.99 for the privilege of updating its database.
Also, Fuel Prices UK has rather unfairly been “Featured” on the Android Market listings in the UK for AGES, which seems a bit unfair. So COME ON WhatGas Petrol Prices! Stick it to The Man.
So well done, Chris. May your new Android app be a monstrous success. And may you eventually find a way to make some money out of doing it, or at least save a bit on petrol.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ January 15, 2010The Android Market is so eff’n biased it’s not even funny. The apps that are featured are almost always the same, the rotating banner at the top always shows the same ones and completely skips some categories as does the featured apps listing. It’s absolutely terrible.

/ January 16, 2010Hi there – I was the develop who built AA Fuel Prices / Fuel Prices UK. The data is not community sourced, we pay a HUGE amount to Experian who maintain a complete database of UK fuel prices, 8,500 stations updated every day!
Happy to give more information for a factually correct article!

/ January 18, 2010Hi Ben,
This article is factually correct. I’m the developer of the WhatGas Petrol Prices app and the data is indeed community driven – it comes from the WhatGas website (hence the name). Check it out: http://www.whatgas.com.
Chris.

Many thanks

/ April 8, 2010A market search for “whatgas” brings it up for me. I’m in the UK, though, and on Android 1.6. So you might need to be in the UK and not on Android 1.5.
