Here we are then – D-Day for mobile phone cameras. Sony Ericsson has squeezed a staggering 8megapixel digital sensor into its imminent X10 Android phone, and will be marketing it as THE phone for sociable people who don’t want to compromise on picture quality.
So that’s the bluster. But what are the photos produced by the X10 actually LIKE? They are like this…
Very, very nice. The blue sky is BLUE – not the usual odd mixture of blotchy, jagged purple pixels and glowing artifacts you get when pointing most cameraphones at the sky.
Another great shot. Background detail is perhaps a little blotchy, but this is still by far the best output we’ve yet seen from an Android phone. Lovely colours. Well done Sony Ericsson and Mother Nature.
UPDATE:
Some photos taken using an Xperia X10 during the tricky “night” period can be found on Sony Ericsson’s blog. Thanks to readers Stephen and Tom for the heads-up.
This sort of shot is always the toughest challenge for a camera – separating light areas from dark. And the X10 pulls it off superbly well. Incidentally, the photographer also has a good eye for a shot and lives in a very pretty place.
The X10 even copes admirably with the always difficult “Photo of the reviewer’s desk” shot. Some great detail there and the X10 manages well in slightly dodgy internal lighting conditions. Looks like Sony Ericsson has CRACKED IT when it comes to squeezing camera tech into a phone.
SO CAN THE X10 REPLACE MY CAMERA?
Finally, yes, we have a mobile phone that could quite happily also be your “main” camera without embarrassing you when you come to share the results.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ January 16, 2010Night. Night is the most important. Good point. I’ll try and steal more night photos off Flickr when doing these updates in future.
