AppMakr "working on" Android version of its simple app creation tool

Speaking to Practical eCommerce today, Scott Suhy, CEO of AppMakr’s parent company PointAbout, confirmed that an Android version of the $199 RSS-based app-publishing service it launched a couple of weeks back on iPhone is being built right now.

Here’s the quote, for reference purposes:

“Currently, the 100-percent native applications that we’re building now with AppMakr are for the iPhone. We’re busy working on the Android release right now, and after Android we’ll more than likely be tackling the BlackBerry platform”

And that’s a sample of Appmakr’s output. It doesn’t do much more than let you jazz up an existing RSS feed and serve it up on Apple’s App Store with a working front-end, so keep your future app ideas in check. If you want to do something complex involving space ships and lasers and physics, there’s no easy route.

Until February/March that is… Bookmark http://www.typhon4android.org and keep an eye out on it in the coming months. Soon a significant MIT licensed open source framework that facilitates real time app/game dev on Android _and_ the desktop will be available. Ok it’s still complex concepts, but it will become much easier on Android soon enough.

Well that sounds exciting. Be sure to mail over any news & announcements when you “go live” Mike.

  2. Right on.. I’ll try and keep you posted.. In addition to the framework a suite of detailed tutorials on the complex stuff will be available. The 1st tutorials/demos jump right into the spaceship/tank/laser/physics area.. The star demo is Auriga3D while not a complete game engine per se it can load Quake3 assets and is Java based and will be released via MIT license as well since it’s original work and not a port of the Quake code, so folks can run with it and create rich 3D game experiences.. I’ll also try and dissect how and why it works via tutorials.

Actually you guys can help me out as I’m very keen on making Typhon an international release. This includes translating the text used in the framework and the tutorial content/videos to as many languages as possible. Also, one feature of Typhon is device configuration facilities mainly surrounding input controls for twitch gaming. I don’t have direct access to Android devices outside the US for the most part. For devices without a keyboard there are graphic overlays for 2D/3D navigation, but for devices with a keyboard I have crowd sourcing features built into the framework that allow users to submit key combinations for proper defaults. These key combinations will provide a database of default configurations that any developer can use to configure apps built with Typhon.

I’ll drop a note in a couple of weeks when I have the teaser video online and a small application for folks to seed the device database with key configurations related to 2D/3D navigation along with a closed beta to ensure Typhon runs on as many devices as possible prior to public release. The only requirement is Android 1.5, so it should run across the ecosystem and provide great tools to built real time apps/games.

  3. I’m already out of my depth reading that, but will happily try to keep people informed :)

  4. Ah… The verbosity bit got flipped on that last one. ;) Basically I’m keen to make Typhon a very open and international oriented release from Android devices supported to availability of language translations in demos, tutorial videos, and text. Soon I’ll be looking for early adopting developers and users around the world to participate in a closed beta to make the public launch a success by helping all developers who use the framework create better experiences for their users. Typhon is the missing framework for real time apps/games on Android.
