Blimey, if you’ve been poking your way through the rather patchy Android gaming scene and thinking “I Could do better than that” here’s a self-help coding book that could help you – Pro Android Games [Amazon link].
The book, written by a Vladimir Silva, claims it will teach you “how to build cool games like Space Blaster and the classic Asteroids from scratch on the latest Android platform” also promising in a rather impenetrable programmer-y kind of way way…
“With actionable real-world source code in hand, this book allows you to dive right into games development on Android. You’ll definitely have fun, and perhaps you’ll even make some money. Enjoy! What you’ll learn How to write/port advanced 3D games for any Android device. How to setup a Linux system for hybrid game compilation. How to combine Java and C code in an elegant manner by building a simple Java application on top of a native library. How to tackle pure Java gaming with two practical games: Space Blaster and the arcade classic Asteroids. How to mix OpenGL API calls in Java and C for high performance 3D graphics using the 3D cubes sample by Google.”
It’s not all good, though – some comments left in Tony Dyson’s Robotworld review point out that, in the fast-moving world of Android, vast chunks of the guide book are already out of date, and are likely to swiftly disappear even further into history as Google rolls out yet more OS updates.
Still, it apparently teaches you all you need to know about getting ports of Doom up and running on Android, so if you miss the old shooter and have the sort of brain that knows what phrases like “building a simple Java application on top of a native library” mean already, this may help.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ January 22, 2010What could be better than knowing how to program your own games rather than buying somebody else’s? Of course by the time I figured it out it would be obsolete :)

/ September 7, 2011Finding this site made all the work I did to find it look like nothing. The reason being that this is such an informative post. I wanted to thank you for this special read of the subject. I definitely savored every little bit of it and I submitted your site to some of the biggest social networks so others can find your blog.
