Here’s today’s Chart of the Day – showing average Android app prices set by developers in the main regions. The figures, compiled by analytics company Distimo, are based around average app asking prices in December, and show that, as a rule, European Android developers charge users a whopping 49% MORE for Android apps than US developers.
These are the average app asking prices on the Android Market, broken down via regions…
The reason Japanese app prices have to be lower is simple – the smartphone market is way more mature over there, so prices have to be lower to compete with the huge number of already well-established operators.
But it’s not all doom & gloom for Android – developer charges for apps on the more business-oriented competing BlackBerry and Windows Mobile platforms are, on average, much higher still, thanks to those app makers really milking the cash out of the business users.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ January 27, 2010I think you’ve got it wrong. The first graph doesnt show that the applications are more expensive in Europe than in the US. Only that developers IN europe are charging more for their apps than their american collegues.
Huge difference.

/ January 27, 2010I think you got it totally wrong with that first chart…
Fist you reduce europe to DE, FR, IT, GB, AT and ES because developers from other countries are not allowed to sell something in the Google Market.
Second is like androidika said… Developers are free to say the price they want for their work but it will be the same on all market regions or have I missed something?
With a lot of US spam devs (not saying that europe dosn’t have them) that push hundreds of 0.99$ apps to the Market it will reduce the average price and fake the statistics.
As long as distimo doesn’t say how they created the statistics, I call it fake or at least not true for all views.

/ January 27, 2010Of course, you’re both right – the graph shows prices charged by developers in each region. Completely forgot prices on the Android Market are global. I’ll attempt to edit this MESS :(
