Android DOUBLED its North-American market share during Q4 2009

That’s the good news, with Mashable pointing out today that Google’s share of the smartphone market rose from 2.5% to 5.2% between September and December of 2009.

Amazingly, despite all the mad global Apple hype, it’s BlackBerry-maker RIM that remains in the lead, taking an astonishing 41.6% of the smartphone market during the final quarter of 2009 – leaving Apple’s iPhone variants with 25.3% and Microsoft’s WinMo handset options on a respectable 18%.

Here’s it all in a little graph. Sorry it’s only in black & white:

Google Android – at the bottom, but growing the fastest. Better that than to be at the top and declining, right? More detailed data and analysis can be found over at comScore.
