Yeah, RIGHT!
Mobile software group Myriad has issued a quite astonishing press release regarding its “Dalvik Turbo virtual machine” software – a new core tool that could replace the existing central app-powering software which sits at the heart of the Android OS.
Apparently compatible with all existing Android processors, games and applications, Myriad’s new Dalvik Turbo software can boost phone app performance by a staggering THREE TIMES, while also reducing battery consumption – two claims which, side by side, would seem to go against the laws of physics.
But anyway. Here’s a quote from Myriad:
“Dalvik Turbo leverages Myriad’s virtual machine expertise to provide this significant increase in performance while retaining full compatibility with existing applications. The technology replaces the existing Dalvik virtual machine in Android and boasts rapid integration, with Myriad engineers demonstrating installation on an untested target device within minutes. Dalvik Turbo also supports a range of processors including those based on ARM, Intel Atom and MIPS Architectures”
Myriad will be showing off its seemingly magical Android TURBOCHARGER at Mobile World Congress, which kicks off next Monday. We will actually be attending MWC – yes, really! – so will hopefully report back on the progress of this seemingly amazing Android development.

It’s certainly possible. There is an experimental JIT build of the dalvik JVM in the Google AOSP repository, and enabling it give a 2-3x performance boost across the board in all android applications. The downside is that the version in Googles AOSP is incomplete and buggy (alpha quality). It is only a matter of time before a fully operational JIT for dalvik VM is released, either by Google or by a 3rd party.
I have no doubts that 3x performance boost is easily achievable.
