Funnily enough, Samsung is launching an app contest right at the same time its ladylike Galaxy Portal Android phone campaign hits full stride, in which it wants YOU to do all the HARD WORK of coming up with clever ideas for possible future apps.
Obviously Estimate Horse Weight has already been done, but if you can come up with something almost as good there could be a £2000 prize in it for you. Here’s the announcement text:
“Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., today announces a new competition to find the best app idea for its latest Android powered handset; Galaxy Portal. Designed to appeal to those of us with great ideas but less than brilliant technical knowledge, Samsung’s Planet App competition is the chance to see your ideas become a reality….however crazy they may seem.
Whether it’s an idea for an app that gets the kids up for school on time, tells you what to wear in the morning, or simply helps you keep track of the football scores more easily – Samsung wants to hear from you.
Suzi Perry, TV presenter and gadget expert, knows a thing or two about technology and will be short-listing ideas that will be put to a public vote: “I’m looking for ideas that are fun and inventive or would be useful to my everyday life. It’s so exciting to be able to make someone’s idea become a reality as most people would be put off even thinking about developing an app because it’s too technical. We’re urging people not to worry about that….we don’t want to constrain creativity.”
So, if you’ve always wondered why there isn’t an app for something in particular then just send in your idea via the website http://www.galaxyportal.co.uk/. Once our panel of judges have chosen a short list of five, we’ll put it to a public vote to find the winner. The idea that gets the most votes gets made and will be available for everyone to download from Android Marketplace for free. As well as seeing their idea become a reality – the winner also gets £2,000.
And here, you lucky people, is a photo of the Gadget Show’s Suzi Perry, who’s been roped in to get men like us a bit more intereted in it all:
Head off over to Samsung’s UK Galaxy Portal page for more details on the app-idea contest, then pop off to T-Mobile to buy a Galaxy portal like a GOOD MODERN CONSUMER.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.
