Sensorly is a seriously clever app, and exactly the sort of innovative tool Android was made for. The app measures network connection types and signal strength wherever you are, compiling the data and sending it off to a central server, where it’s collated, chucked over a map and sent out to other users.
The end result should be much better and more tightly localised than the rather flaky guesstimates provided by network operators. Here’s how it works, according to Sensorly:
Users install one of our free applications for their enjoyment.
These applications collect network signal quality without disturbing the user and report it to our servers. (Of course, we don’t report any personal data, not even the phone’s number!)
Our servers munch the data, mix it with our secret sauce and update the colorful coverage map (we do that 24/7).
The latest version of the Sensorly app supports Android 1.5, so all the world’s HTC Hero users are now able to join in and contribute their findings to the network coverage maps.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.
