Direct-grabbing OS screenshot power obtained

This won’t mean much to you guys, but today is a momentous day in the life and history of EuroDroid – we have learned how to take direct screenshots from our Android phone, thanks to the Android SDK and many hours of pain.

Here’s what our phone looks like at this very moment in time. Admire our lossless direct dumps.

Bit of a nightmare to set up, but didn’t require any “rooting” – although some of the guides out there are a bit wide of the mark. We’ll put together a simple guide ourselves over the weekend, if you’re interested.

  1. If you’re using ADB or DDMS, you should know that the shots you get are a little lower quality than they could be. That’s why I did almost all the screenshots for Hello, Android using the emulator and a screen grabber on the PC. You get more color depth and less dithering that way, so I recommend it when possible.

Just open DDMS in eclipse, select the device, click on the screenshot button – is there more to it?

“Just open DDMS in eclipse, select the device, click on the screenshot button…”

That’s easy for you to say :)

For someone with zero development experience and none of the tools, it’s a nightmare. You need the Android SDK, Eclipse, and Java development tools, all updated with the newest packages, then the correct ADB USB driver – which seems nigh-on impossible to locate.

I don’t expect anyone to be *impressed* by this, btw, it’s something I’ve been meaning to do for months and am happy about it.

I’ve reached my “target weight” you could say.

And thanks, Ed, I’ll maybe look into that option once I’ve come down from today’s tech-conquering high :)

  4. Hello, you say you can take screenshots directly from the phone???? without conect it to pc?

Yes, you do need to connect it to a PC. Unless you have a “rooted” phone, in which case you can download screen-grabbing tools via the Android Market that will dump an image onto your SD card.
