Vodafone: HTC Magic WILL be updated with a new Android OS “at some point this year”

Hooray! Speaking yesterday on the UK Vodafone forum, Vodafone customer-placation engineer Tom told disgruntled HTC Magic users that the company IS planning to update the phone’s Android OS to a “newer platform” at “some point” during “this year”.

That’s all the data we need to stop worrying that our little HTC Magic is going to become obsolete during 2010. Here’s where he ACTUALLY SAID IT, although he make no specific mention of Android 2.0 or 2.1:

“Right, moving on to the HTC Magic specifically, I have a little more information. The handset will be updated to a newer platform later at some point this year. We’re discussing this with Google at the moment and will let customers know as soon as an upgrade rollout date has been set.

“Just to clarify, you may also have seen reports that HTC that it will be updating all Android handsets to version 2.1 in the near future. This only applies to HTC branded handsets (basically any without the word “Google” printed on the casing) in the US at the moment, although as soon as we get any information on if this will happen for UK HTC Android devices, we will let you know.”

Woo and hoo. That’s great news. Vodafone’s been selling the “With Google” branded HTC Magic for a very long time (although it’s recently taken it off sale in favour of the cheaper Tattoo), meaning there’s a BIG userbase for the phone in the UK. A big, happy userbase now.
