Once again, HTC Europe has announced the arrival of new firmware updates – but neglected to supply any sort of official information about what might be fixed, changed or updated in the new ROM.
The official releases are for the Legend and Bravo (AKA Desire) and should be gradually appearing on your phones soon, network permitting. Here’s the announcement from HTC’s support site – it’s next to useless, but does at least contain the ROM numbers for your information.
“Update – HTC Legend and Bravo Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) update
In our commitment to providing you with the best user experience, we are pushing out a new firmware update to your phone. Your phone will receive a notification of this update when it is made available. Simply press OK to accept the update via a data connection such as Wi-Fi or GPRS/3G. After installing the update, you can confirm a successful update by confirming the Software Number (From the Home Screen go to MENU> Settings> About Phone> Software information> Software number). The new software number after the update will be 1.31.405.4 on HTC Legend and 1.21.405.2 on HTC Desire.
And at least this gives us an excuse to use a promotional image of the lesser-spotted HTC Legend:
As ever, if you do receive an update, please let us know. HTC’s an IMPENETRABLE WALL of silence, and we don’t have the full suite of Android hardware to test these things ourselves.
UPDATE:
According to a thread on the XDA Developers forum, this update changes the phones’ radio image as well as upgrading a few of the installed apps and fixing a few teeny bugs.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ June 3, 2010I received a OTA update on my HTC Legend (Vodafone) more than a week ago!
My “Software number” in the phone settings is:
1.32.161.4
Albert
/ August 6, 2010do not get it why my HTC Legend software NUMBER read 2.06.709.3
What’s the difference. It is not firmware 2.2 I have been waiting for.
Matt
/ June 3, 2010I just pumped my fists in the air for no reason and made myself look like an idiot thought it was a 2.2 update.
Bristolboy
/ June 3, 2010Updated this morning (manually) on desire on o2. Seems like phone is running faster when testing using Linpack. Now 8+ mflops where as before it was more like 6! Anyone else had this improvement?
Jonathan Mallett
/ June 3, 2010I can’s say that mine is faster, actually seems a bit sluggish… :(

/ June 3, 2010My software Number reads 1.31.405.5 !! is that good or bad? Hmm
Mark
/ June 3, 2010just updated legend on vodafone but not vodafone 360 branded version, software number is 1.31.405.5 too, very strange. doesn’t fix email app not opening some emails.

/ June 3, 2010HTC Legend…just recieved and installed update. phone now showing 1.31.405.5 on vdafone network. Is this a fix for the bad wifi and me having to reset my sitecom router everytime i want a wifi connection?
Kathy
/ June 4, 2010I had my OTA update this morning on my Desire. I was excited that it was Android Froyo – but not spotted any major changes so far.
Its saying Firmmware 2.1-update1 and software 1.21.405.2 which seems different to everyone else.
:(
tui0hcg
/ June 4, 2010Ya also got update this morning on my Desire. Don’t see any major changes so far.
Its saying Firmware 2.1-update1 and software 1.21.405.2
Anyone know what has changed or when we can expect Froyo?
triangulo
/ June 4, 2010just tried to upgrade the firmware on my desire and noticed that there was an update available. As it seems, it’s not the Froyo update. firware 2.1-update1, software number 1.21.405.2.

/ June 4, 2010Just tried running the software update on my HTC Desire… all went smoothly until the phone rebooted: firmware downloaded, installed and handset rebooted. But, then it asked me for an 8 digit SIM unlock code, which I didn’t know. Called Orange and the codes they gave me didn’t work either. Tested the SIM card on another handset, but it was working fine. Anyway, long story short, Orange are sending me out a replacement handset tomorrow.
No idea what would have caused the problem. I did do a ROM reset after I got the phone originally to strip out the Orange apps/customisations (following the instructions on Modaco), but didn’t imagine this would adversely affect the HTC updates.
Anyone else encounter any problems like this?
Rafal
/ June 4, 2010I just received the automated message about an update available.
Downloaded it and it installed ok.
“Congratulations! Your phone has been updated successfully to version 1.31.405.5″
Everything looks as previously. At least at first glance…
Bill
/ June 4, 2010I updated without any issues on an unlocked unbranded HTC Desire from Handtec.
@Shani – I believe the fact you removed the Orange branding is what caused your issue. If you check out various forums (in particular xda-devs) you’ll see that people who have removed the branding have had issues after installing this update (some report WiFi wont work any longer).
Desire
/ June 4, 2010I have the black version htc desire on Orange, and have yet to receive this update. i manually checked in settings and sayd that there are no updates for my phone.
Anyone know whats happening?

/ June 4, 2010Updated my HTC Desire on Three today – no problems so far, too early to spot any improvements.

Richard
/ June 5, 2010Updated last night, now showing 1.21.405.2 on my HTC Desire. Wish I hadn’t as wifi no longer available on the phone :(
Bristolboy
/ June 5, 2010I updated with no issues. Those on Orange/Three may be waiting for the networks to add on their branding before they release the update (looking at the comments above at least some of those who have received the update use unlocked phones).
morgie
/ June 5, 2010Updated on Three as mentioned above. Phone on T Mobile in the UK also successfully updated yesterday.
Andy
/ June 6, 2010I was lucky enough to get one of the unbranded Desires on 3 before they started branding them. I have updated this morning and have had no problems with Wifi or anything else since the update. Prior to the update I had loads of problems with contacts mysteriously vanishing from the phone book/contacts and calendar sync probs with both gmail and outlook etc. I hope HTC have fixed some of these bugs in this release – fingers crossed!
Gary C
/ June 6, 2010I think the wi-fi failure issue only affects those updating de-branded Desires.
But don’t quote me on that. Or indeed, don’t quote me on anything.

/ June 6, 2010Hi, i just upgraded my Desire this morning, everything works except wifi :(
Iv got a de-branded Orange Desire, the update went smooth no prob, once the update was done it started up fine, only thing i noticed was the Wifi didnt work, In Setting > Wireless & network, it say “unable to start Wi-Fi” under Wi-Fi.
Firmware version; 2.1-update1
Software number; 1.21.405.2
Any Help how to fix this?
Duncan
/ June 7, 2010Upgraded my Desire on 3. Only difference I’ve noticed so far is that the Facebook for HTC Sense app has some changes – I figure I’m the only one still bothering to try to use it.
Mark
/ June 7, 2010Just updated my Vodafone Desire Monday morning. Strangely, I have:
Firmware version 2.1-update1

Anyone else updated a Vodafone Desire and got a number like that?

/ June 8, 2010i didnt realise they started to brand and lock these phones down – i got a htc desire from carphonewarehouse (uk) last month – and at the time she sales assis told me all their htc desires were being sold unlocked. I updated yesterday, no problems with wifi.

/ June 9, 2010I just updated my desire. Everything seemed to be going fine until it rebooted, confirmed that the update was successful and tried restoring my data. Now i have the cycling cursor and “restoring your data and settings from the backup”. Its been like this for about 30mins and even after i rebooted the fone. I’ve been receiving calls though.
Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?
mark
/ June 10, 2010Hate the fact operators force their crap branded phones at you, almost debranded my desire until reading this as can bet ur bottom dollar that Orange and others won’t bother with new firmware a few months down the line while the normal HTC phones will get 2.2 and all the other delights yet to come! If you have the choice, always go unlocked and untouched!
Simon Blackley
/ June 11, 2010Anyone know if it’s worth applying the update to an unlocked Desire – and if so how I do it?

/ June 13, 2010Is this update good for phones outside EU as well?
I asking that due to I’m not getting any OTA.
Where I can download it manually?
Saleh
/ June 13, 2010Straight forward upgrade here. Nothing seems different at least for now
Keith
/ June 14, 2010Here you can download the update manually directly from HTC, along with instructions on how to apply it.
I did it and it worked perfectly!

T-Mobile have said they have taken the update down due to tech issues they were experiencing, I have a funny feeling my desire is actually a virgin phone that has been unlocked as it has a virgin scene and had shortcut to virgin media.

/ July 6, 2010Hi. Received OTA update last week in Portugal, for a SIM-free Desire.
First impression, the phone was faster, but it’s just a trick, The guys from HTC ONLY deactivated windows animations in Settings->Sound&Display->Animation. After restoring the setting speed was the same.
They did clean a little bit of RAM, aprox. 20MB, not bad!!!
After first reboot the system asked to restore definitions, everything worked ok except for the home screen, I lost selected widgets and background, so had to configure again. No data lost do!
Worst part is instability, already had 2 spontaneous reboots this week, both of them wile using 3G…
Mark
/ July 8, 2010Downloaded update 1.21.405.2 today and all is working fine on my Desire.

/ August 14, 2010Hi
I did an update and damm I cannot access any webpage using wi-fi now. Network from my vodafone will cost me an arm and a leg. ?My upgrade was to android 2.2 ? browser version webkit 3.1.
This is what I see:
The application internet (process com.android.browser) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force close.
The update took a long time, I left it on overnight near my wifi and applied the update this am.
Any suggestions much appreciated.
Thank you

/ August 26, 2010Unlocked (but not rooted) HTC Legend (from Hong Kong, Broadway), just got the OTA update in mainland China. Messages tweaked as noted above and “unable to start wi-fi”. Soft and hard resets didn’t help. China Mobile data stream still works, but slow (and expensive!).
Firmware: 2.1 update1
Software: 2.06.708.2
Any help/suggestions appreciated!

/ August 27, 2010Upgraded and my Desire (T-Mobile) now shows Software Ver: 2.09.405.8.
Noticed following changes:
1) The Visible Pattern security is now not always invoked when unlocking the Desire. Allows user direct access to phone. Problem seems to be intermittent..?
2) Annoying for me!!.. At office, when phone is in Vigrate mode, it seems to vibrate every 15 or so mins… cannot work out why and if there is something switch on since upgrade or what???
Chris
/ August 29, 2010HTC Legend – 2.1 Update 1 has RUINED this phone for me. I now hate it!
Messages is screwed up, so I’ve had to download a 3rd party app called Handcent which after a few tweaks is running OK.
Friend Stream now Force Closes everytime. I have removed it from the home screen now.
Roll on 2.2 is all I can say, that or I may just get an iPhone 4 instead.
FAIL.
Ray
/ September 5, 2010I would like to take over your Legend for my developing.

/ September 20, 2010Graeme – I’m having exactly the same problem with it suddenly jumping to the top of the conversation and no longer being able to see what I’m writing – it’s driving me mad – can’t see a way to get back to the bottom, without pressing Back and saving the msg as a draft, then starting again?
Ola
/ October 5, 2010I have the exact same problem, but you can just scroll down to the bottom again. (This might be a drag if your text history is long with that person).
They should really fix this, it’s annooyyying.
Graeme
/ September 21, 2010Karen you can just scroll back down to the bottom to continue but this is very irritating and its happening more and more. There are other little issues that only seem to have come up since froyo, suchas random capitalization of words (especially The), and when opening messages a message from another sender will open instead. Tried using handcent but same issues. I love the phone and wouldn’t change it for anything, I just hope HTC iron out these issues sooner rather than later.

I have found a slightly quicker way to return – reorient handset to landscape then back again. Not ideal but quicker.

/ December 14, 2010Just updated my HTC legend today to Android 2.2 – 3.15.405.3, because the last update I did had the problem with the message screen where it only showed the first text in a stream so I had to scroll all the way through the texts and it infuriated me but lo an behold the new update now does not let me receive any kind of GPRS signal so no 3G or anything! I have contacted orange and they are sending me a sim update now so hopefully this will fix things. I hasten to add that the 2.2 update version I have listed actually fixed the problem with the message stream and made the phone look a lot nice but I just hope this signal problem can be fixed! has anyone else had this problem at all?
Tom O'Shea

/ December 19, 2010I updated my HTC Wildfire yesterday, and since then my clock widgets are gone! I still have the boring analog one in the top of the widgets list, but the ones you’re able to customize are GONE. Some other widgets and programs have vanished from my phone and I am really frustrated! I updated to 2.1-update 1. Does anyone know how to get these widgets back? I’ve been searching the Android Market, but the only widgets they have there are ones made by customers and not HTC – and I don’t really want to install anything that I don’t really know who made it and that can damage my phone… :S
