HTC is describing today’s new HTC Hero ROM update as including a “Firmware over-the-air (FOTA) client update” so it is at least doing something, and it sounds like this is indeed the preparatory system update that HTC mentioned previously, the one that paves the way for the eventual coming of Android 2.1 to the HTC Hero.
Here’s the update news, direct from HTC’s support pages. It’s as brief as ever:
“Update – HTC Hero Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) update
In our commitment to providing you with the best user experience, we are pushing out a new firmware update to your HTC Hero. Your phone will receive a notification of this update when it is made available. Simply press OK to accept the update via a data connection such as Wi-Fi or GPRS/3G. After installing the update, you can confirm a successful update by confirming the Build number (From the Home Screen go to MENU> Settings> About Phone> Build number). The new Build number after the update will be 2.73.405.93; 2.73.405.94 (Nordic) & 2.73.405.95 (Greece/ Ireland). Update Information: Firmware over-the-air (FOTA) client update & YouTube player Update.”
And you also get a YouTube app update. That’ll be exciting.
Let us know if you’ve managed an update to this. Please. This is exciting.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

What carrier are you with? I’m on Orange and nothing has popped up on mine yet….

/ November 11, 2010Sonic01, Jim J.
If you’re on Orange, the update works fine. First you have to make sure you have the latest ROM upgrade from the HTC website:
http://www.htc.com/uk/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=283&act=sd&cat=2
For Orange handsets, the direct link is:
http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=283&cat=2&dl_id=864
Then check that your Software number is: 2.73.61.66.
If this is the case, reset your phone and you may receive an two updates, the first is a small one, the second is the ROM upgrade to 2.1.
This worked for me perfectly. Other people have had to change their dates back a month for the updates to arrive.
The key is to make sure you’re on Software number 2.73.61.66, anything lower and nothing will happen.
Good luck.

I changed the date then turned on wifi and as you say it prompts you almost immediately.

/ June 15, 2010Hey does anyone know what the new features are. the youtube looks the same. The only difference that I have noticed, is that when i went into the market, I got a notification that there were updates.
Anyone know if there are any new updates more obvious or hidden? I also have a check now for firmware version in settings but think that was before Surely it should be firmware version 1.51 not 1.5 again.
Thanks

/ June 15, 2010UK/T-Mobile (G2 Touch)
Rebooted phone last night and it said there was an update which I accepted.
Now have a “System Software Update” option which I don’t think was there before. Can’t see any difference to YouTube.
My build number doesn’t match the one on Hero website though.
Mine is 2.73.110.91
Craig
/ June 16, 2010UK/T-Mobile G2 Touch
I used the date advance trick, and the notification appeared immediately and prompted me to update. My phone then went about downloading the update. Once this had finished, I saw the same prompt as the first time. I pressed to proceed and this time my phone restarted, showing me a yellow update bar. This took about 5 minutes to complete. Once that was done, the phone restarted again and got to the T-mobile screen, where it sat for around another 5 minutes when I saw the buttons light up. It then booted as normal.
The Youtube update does make a difference (I watch Youtube videos from my phone quite regularly).
My build number is now 2.73.110.91 – must be a T-mobile thing.
Roll on 2.1!
androidnewbie
/ June 16, 2010From what I understand the only phones that will be getting the OTA updates are the ‘officially branded’ Google phones like the G1, G2 and Nexus One, all other models will be updated through the HTC Support pages for each specific model. My Hero is on 3 UK and I haven’t had anything…

/ June 16, 2010UK – Unbranded Hero on Orange Network – No update, even after changing date, rebooting phone… etc. This will be painful if it happens when the 2.1 update occurs. Anyone else upset we’ll never get 2.2 on a phone that desperately needs the speed update?

/ June 16, 2010@androidnewbie

when did you get your hero, maybe we have to wait until its sent to ours, i got mine quite late it must of been around Feb at a guess
androidnewbie
/ June 16, 2010@cashmang
lol!! These seem to be the only 2 websites discussing this properly! I got mine before Christmas and have been waiting with bated breath ever since. I’ve had no end of problems with mine too, it’s been in for repair twice in that time and even now things are beginning to stop working like email, widgets etc, it’s like it’s just starting to shut down so I need this update desperately!!
The ting I can’t understand is why would this OTA update not be available to everyone as this it seems is merely an enabling update for the main 2.1 update, so what possible reason could there be for not rolling it out to every phone now and then stagger the release of 2.1 depending on your network? Who can possible explain what’s going on with bot HTC and the always unpredictable 3UK!
cashmang
/ June 16, 2010@androidnewbie
i agree with you 100% things have started to go wrong with my phone with emails and texts notifications. but its still more fun then my old nokia
i have a feeling, well a guess that the pre update is mainly setting the phone up so it can take such a large file via phone updates.
waiting for this was annoying, news out that Taiwan had it…we had to wait….then everyone but 3uk and orange are getting it all around us, and yet we still have to wait grrrr rage!
btw have you noticed an improvement since 3uk ‘improved’ there network? i find my 3g and my HSDPA connections have got worse….
androidnewbie
/ June 16, 2010@cashmang
Oh yeah, I do love Android compared to my old Nokia E71 although it still needs some refinement, some of the apps are a joke and should never be allowed near the market, I’m all for open source but I hate having to trawl through so much rubbish just to get an app that’s ultimately just a stripped down and worse looking app of the iPhone version. Never quite understood why google maps was quite so terrible compared to the iPhone considering it’s a google app, same goes for the Gmail app too. I can’t wait to have a decent package of apps like everyone else seems to have already…
I agree, this update is just to set the phone up for the main update, therefore everyone should get it regardless of network which is what’s p*#%ing me off!!
The network around London is generally OK but sometimes it will just disappear for no reason, then about half an hour later will come back. It’s a terrible network really and won’t be going with 3UK again after this but I just hope they at least furnish us with these updates in the meantime and make the remainder of my contract (18 looooong months!) go a little smoother.
What are your thoughts of 3UK?
blob
/ June 16, 2010Got a popup in the morning, but had to cancel due to roaming. Just few hours ago after crossing the German border I did a “time trick” and got the update popup.

/ June 16, 2010i find that for calls and texts it fine as i live just out of london myself, but the 3g is abit on the flaky from time to time. but i had so many issues with orange and vodafone! and plus i like my current number and i dont want the hassle of transfering it across to another network. and my deal isnt too bad, but im on the 24 month contract XD, i still have my nokia to fall back on if it doesnt ‘work out’ but fingers crossed they will get it to us soon.
i think changing the date just make the hero search for updates so i will be changing the date every 10 seconds…. :P okay every 3 hours or so :)

/ June 19, 2010on 3UK PAYG still no update for either update
tried date trick with no luck
tried to phone 3 technical support and got to the indian call center
poor woman was very confused and after 20mins of being put on hold and being told that indeed I can use android on my HTC Hero I gave up
obviously 3 is very cunning in hiding info from its customers behind confused and unknowing call center staff
NB
/ June 19, 2010Oh also phoned HTC UK support and got a very nice explanation of why some people must be taking a while to get some (but did not explain why 3 and orange were not getting updates)
The guy basically told me this
Now imagine all the HTC Hero’s in europe trying to download the updates all at once, the servers will block to many on a list in order to ensure a nice speedy download for those who get through… just wait for your HTC Hero to check for updates again roughly every 14 days and you will get it.
so from what I gathered from that is that there is a list of Hero S/N’s and basically they are being offered in order on the list….. but that could just be a crock of s***
3 is probably just trying to put on a load of their own stuff into the update to ensure you get free 3UK stuff like skype so as to prevent hassle for users but damn man I’ve been waiting too long and I go on deployment in a couple weeks. I demand an update! I want my shiny new 2.1 to be ready for when I come back home.

/ June 19, 2010hi! ive got the t mobile g2 touch, yes i av recieved an update but my build number is 2.73.110.91 and not what it said on the page. Does this effect the 2.1 update, cos i heard that to sucessfully install the 2.1 update, your Hero needs to run the latest ROM version (2.73.405.5) dated 11 September 2009.
got that from this article:
http://www.eurodroid.com/2010/06/update-dutch-htc-twitter-account-confirms-roll-out-of-htc-hero-android-2-1/
so my question is would it effect the android 2.1 update.

/ July 30, 2010I tried the date trick, forwarding myself in time to the middle of August. Immediately I got the update notification! I’m on a BT Hero in the UK. However it still says Firmware version 1.5 although my build number has changed from 2.73.405.66 to 2.73.405.95 so somethings happened… maybe the pre-updater? I might try going back to the future again for the second package.

I have seen no sign of Android 2.1 yet, but would like to; has anyone else got it, and is there anything I can do to hurry it along?

/ August 12, 2010… having said which, I had another go at resetting the date, and we have lift-off! ;o)
Simply set the year to 2011 and after a couple of minutes it offered me a 4.37 MB upgrade, to build 2.73.405.93, which said it updated YouTube but also added a “System Software Upgrade” option on the About menu.
When I selected that, it offered me a 79.88 MB upgrade, which is just uppacking but I guess to be Android 2.1.
Here’s hoping I have a good backup of all my data! I had AppBrain installed, which should find all my other applications for me …

/ August 21, 2010Have a T-Mobile G2, SIM unlocked, with a non-T-mobile SIM in it.
Am in an area with no T-Mobile (or Orange, or 3, or Vodaphone) coverage.
Is there a link to download the upgrade from, or has it *got* to be done over the air?

Other people have had to change their dates FORWARD a few month for the updates to arrive.
The key is to make sure you’re on Software number 2.73.61.66, anything lower and nothing will happen.
Good luck.
