Following a rather large amount of excitement yesterday over HTC’s release of a minor update for the Euro HTC Hero, the company has put out a slightly more factual statement about what yesterday’s OS update does – and more importantly what it will soon do.
Yesterday’s update was indeed only the previously reported preparatory PHASE ONE of the European Android 2.1 upgrade roll-out, which paves the way for PHASE TWO – the actual arrival of the new OS.
Here’s HTC’s full statement, courtesy of Android Community:
“Android Éclair update for HTC Hero will be released by the end of June. The upgrade will come in two parts, the first of which will roll out from this week and will be detected when the Hero next automatically checks for software updates. The second part of the update will follow towards the end of the month. As the second part of the upgrade will wipe all data on the handset, Hero users should ensure any important data has been backed up before proceeding with the installation. Due to the size of the update, wherever possible, we would advise using a WiFi connection for this download to avoid additional data charges”
Yesterday was just the foreplay, basically. A bit of drunken groping. The full European Android 2.1 update is still on schedule to arrive before the end of June.
It is so very, very close. Try changing your phone’s clock to even further in the future and seeing if anything happens…

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ June 16, 2010HTC are unbelievably frustrating. It’s all rumours and guess work. Even this “announcement” is hardly official. I would have more respect for them if they just came out and said “the update will be arriving on 30th June”. Yes, it would be a wait, but at least there’d be some clarity. I know the 18th June date was never definite, but why let the rumour build up?

/ June 18, 2010Hello, I am from Denmark, so I have downloaded the new over 100mb update AND received the FOTA update too, without having to change the date or anything.
The big update is just a stock 1.5 rom, which cleans everything on the phone! (backup everything)
And then i receive a 4.(something)mb. FOTA for my device and i downloaded it… But nothing visible happened at all.. Still running 1.5, just with a new Build number (2.73.405.94)
So my guess would be that this was just a test on how the big 2.1 update is going to take place, and hopefully it will come over the next few days…

/ June 19, 2010Wonderful. I didn’t get the Sync to work before the 2.0.0.33 update, now it’s broken again. I backed up everything, but I can’t get into Android Market to reinstall the MyBackup, so I can restore… Why is it so hard to separate user data, app data and system data, so the system can be upgraded without wiping the entire phone?
