Crikey. It was only during last month’s Google I/O 2010 conference that Google claimed it was activating 100,000 Android phones around the world every single day – but that figure has now EXPLODED to an incredible 160,000. Every day.
The new numbers come courtesy of a few quotes given by Google’s Eric Schmidt to The Guardian today, during an event which was meant to promote Motorola’s new DROID X – but Schmidt clearly couldn’t help banging the general Android Drum as well. Here’s a screencapture of the Guardian report:
With thanks to “Bristolboy” for the heads-up. Nice to know we have a few Guardian-readers onboard and that our crazed tabloid style hasn’t scared everyone off.
UPDATE:
Google has just confirmed these figures in a post on the Official Google Blog, in which it also revealed that the Android 2.2 source code has been released to all developers and partners. Here’s the 160k quote:
“Every day 160,000 Android-powered devices are activated — that’s nearly two devices every second, used for the first time by people from New York to New Zealand.”

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.
