“Second Package” of HTC Hero Android 2.1 update goes live… in South East Asia

The HTC Hero 2.1 update is slowly spreading. We’ve previously reported on the release of the upgraded OS in Taiwan – and HTC has today unleashed the update in South East Asia. So if you’re planning on holidaying out there in the next few days – take your phone. You never know.

There are two announcements on HTC’s South East Asia support page – the first, for the preparatory 2.1 update, says the release applies to Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Here’s the second part announcement, straight from HTC’s Asian Support page:

Update – HTC Hero Android 2.1 Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) update (Second Package)

In our commitment to providing you with the best user experience, we are pushing out a new firmware update to your HTC Hero. Your phone will receive a notification of this update when it is made available. Simply press OK to accept the update via a data connection such as Wi-Fi or GPRS/3G. After installing the update, you can confirm a successful update by confirming the Firmware version (From the Home Screen go to MENU> Settings> About Phone> Firmware version). The new Firmware version will be 2.1.

Update Information: Android 2.1 Platform Upgrade

Note:Please back up your data first, and you have to upgrade your phone with the first FOTA package to be able to get the Android 2.1 FOTA upgrade.

South East Asia is slightly nearer Europe than Taiwan (yes, we looked on a map), so we’re legally OK to say the Android 2.1 update for the Hero is officially nearer today than it was yesterday. Physically speaking.

It’s escaped from Taiwan and is spreading across the mainland. More news soon. We’ll track this every inch of the way. With thanks to reader Paul for the spot.

As an Orange UK customer I got my 1st update over a week ago. If anyone is having problems change the date to 2011. Seems to have worked for everybody else having issues.

Can see the main 2.1 update arriving next week in Europe. Seeing as HTC said by the end of June, I wouldn’t expect them to release it 1 second earlier.

  5. I wish they would hurry up and release 2.1 on the Hero in the UK, it is a total farce!

That’s ridiculous from Orange. anybody contacted T-Mobile about the G2? Hopefully they’ll be decent enough to release it within a week of the generic Hero release.

Baz. As Ive already mentioned I got the update the same date as the rest of Europe. I am with Orange, it is generic because it was released to every hero regardless or carrier. I had to change my year to 2011 to get it to start and I suggest u do the same

What a shame. I thought that HTC would be as forward looking company as its phones are good (at launch) but hey, been woken from that dream now. How a company can stumble along in such a disorganised way about a software update that it must know most of its customers would be waiting for is unbelievable. I cant wait for the end of my contract as I will be going elsewhere for my next smartphone.

If the time-trick hasn’t worked for you yet try changing to 2012 or even further away. Worked for me yesterday. Just restart the phone, change the date then connect to a wi-fi network.

Gotta love Orange saying there is no plans to update to 2.1 and saying its HTC’s fault
