PICTURE: HTC Hero updating itself to Android 2.1… in India

A user on the XDA Developers forum has a friend (bear with us) in India who owns an HTC Hero. He’s currently in the process of installing a 79.6MB OTA update on his HTC Hero, thanks to HTC’s Indian OS update. It’s the same 2.1 update that went live in SE Asia yesterday.

We just thought you long-suffering Hero owners might like something reassuring to look at…

htc hero asia india android update

Imagine that. Imagine that happening on YOUR MOBILE TELEPHONE. It should start happening this week. It must start happening this week. What on earth are we going to write about once it lands?

We’ll probably have to go back to writing poorly-thought-out opinion columns to fill the days :(

I’m in the UK. when I looked at my phone this morning it said downloading firmware 7% in the ongoing notifications category. (I was on wi-fi) It then came up with a box asking me to update now or update later. I tapped update now and the phone restarted. The download had gone from the notifications when it restarted and no difference what so ever in software. I checked settings and it said software version 1.5. There is nothing in the my downloads section of the market and when I check for updates in the “about phone” section of settings it says I am up to date. I am clearly not. WHAT DID I DO WRONG? IT SAID IT WAS UPDATING AND NOW NOTHING. OH GOD.
    ANY suggestions welcome.

That’ll be the “preparatory” part one of the update, with a tweaked YouTube app. It’s a good thing and means you’re ready for the full 2.1.

    Which will arrive… soon, probably.

    @ Charlie

That update you just received is the preparatory update. It’s not 2.1. You’ve done everything fine you just have to wait now for the European release of the Hero update and then your network operator should you have a G2 for instance.

I’m extremely relieved that this is finally arriving. I do love my Hero, and I’d hate to abandon it just so I can keep up to date in terms of software. I somehow can’t see HTC bothering with putting out anything higher than 2.1 for the Hero though, which is slightly upsetting.

    @ Cokey

I think so because it worked on my G2. It doesn’t to much once it’s installed, it just fixes the YouTube player and in Settings > About > it adds a button regarding Software updates.

Hi, none of you mention which network you are on. I’m on t-mobile and have not got anything at all yet. I assume you are all on unlocked phones and have the HTC upgrades or other networks are doing a better job…

I’m also on T-Mobile. I’ve received the first update. Try setting your phones date to a month later e.g. 28th July. You should then receive a pop up regarding the first preparatory update.

Hi, I have the HTC Hero on Orange, I have had NO notifications yet about any update, I have tried setting the Date forward both in terms of a month and a year, and that didnt work! This is getting rather frustrating now, we have been waiting for this update for so long now! Please update this post with whats happening with your HERO and what network your on. Thanks.

WHOOO HOOO……In the UK, using a UK unlocked Hero on Vodafone network. I’ve just clicked on the “update” button we got from the first update and its now currently installing 2.1. Downloaded quickly over WiFi and is now installing which is taking longer (been about 10 minutes now). I’ll let you know if it all goes well.
