HTC: Desire, Legend & Wildfire to get Android 2.2 “beginning in Q3″

HTC has outlined plans to upgrade several of its Android handsets to newer versions of the OS, with the Android 2.2 “FroYo” release confirmed as on its way to the HTC Desire – and also the less-famed Wildfire and Legend Android phones.

Speaking to blog Recombu, HTC came out with the following, slightly disappointing if we’re being honest, new timescale:

“We are working hard with our partners to update the HTC Sense experience on Froyo and distribute it to our customers as fast as possible. We expect to release updates for several of our 2010 models including Desire, Legend and Wildfire beginning in Q3

Q3 is July/August/September, as long as HTC’s Taiwanese overlords are using the same calendar as us.

Phew, we were worried we’d have no Android update news to write now the Hero update is out of the way. Instead, we’ve got Desire, Wildfire and Legend update news to write about!

That’s THREE TIMES the amount of news about firmware launch dates.

I don’t see this as disappointing news at all. Its a lot better than some of HTCs previous update schedules. Yes they now have more competition and need to get a move on but still. Compared to the Hero saga this, if real, is good news.

To be totally honest about it if you bought a phone you weren’t happy with that is also your own stupid fault. Phone development move so fast, especially Android phones, that if you were expecting your nice shiny new HTC Desire to remain top end for more than 3-6 months you were deluded. April to June is the 3 month life cycle that you should expect with Android. Maybe in another year or so Android development will slow and the only thing you will need is a new handset if you want to be on the bleeding edge.

The Desire is still one of the best phones out there even with Eclair so I don’t see the disappointment. Just the opportunity to make it even better in another month or so.

Go HTC, Go Android, Go Google – hell yeah!

Totally agree with you Mike. New fw upgrade will let Desire keep its status as is even longer, not much more than this. However, if it may have 720p video recording with 30 fps then would -almost- be perfect, mean via an official update as well. Not mentioning abt fm sender and wi-fi N capabilities which -acc to some devs- are already built in the Desire but not activated. Rgds

Fantastic news for me, a Legend owner! I was worried that I was going to have to root, which I don’t really want to risk! As long as they keep to their word though.

The main feature which I REALLY want is apps2sd, the rest are just a bonus.
