Skyfire brings live streaming World Cup TV action to Android

Users in the UK have been reporting some success with the brand-new mobile TV service from TVCatchup, and now there’s another way for international users to keep up with the World Cup through their phones – thanks to Flash-enabled Android browser Skyfire.

Here’s how it works. It’s a touch convoluted, and only works when matches are live, AND relies on a third-party site for its video feed, but it could help if you’re somewhere without telly at a critical time:

Skyfire, makers of the Flash-video enabled mobile browser for Android, Window’s Mobile and Nokia smartphones, is allowing football fans to get their fix with the ability to watch the 2010 FIFA World Cup live on their mobile devices.

By accessing Univision Football at www.futbol.univision.com via Skyfire, fans of ‘the world’s game’ can watch as 32 countries compete to be crowned champion of the largest and most respected international tournament on the globe. Skyfire users can also enjoy World Cup and other sports highlights and commentary on thousands of other web sites that will be talking about the world cup over the next few weeks, for free.
Univision’s broadcast is free and requires no subscription like other services. Although commentary is in Spanish, Skyfire employees point out that there’s nothing like the announcer call of “Goooooaaaaalllll” on a Spanish language broadcast to put you in a football fever mood

Does that make sense? It’s basically Skyfire relying on someone else’s web broadcast, so as long as the someone else in question doesn’t mind it ought to last the tournament.

That’s a generic screenshot of Skyfire’s Flash-crunching, server-side compression thing we took some time ago. We suspect you ought to get used to seeing this screen if you’re planning on using the service…

  1. Univision WebSite doesn’t allow to watch matches on every location.
In South America it doesn’t work.

Also tried UStream but can’t seem to find a channel that is really streaming the games…a bunch of crappy channels !!

So i haven’t been able to watch a single game on my android phone just yet….
