At first glance I had assumed Metal Detector was another “joke” app for Android, like the many iterations of Gaydar, or the app that promised to turn the camera into some sort of X-ray device that would enable me to see through ladies clothing. Trust me, that one doesn’t work no matter how long you persevere.
To my surprise, Metal Detector kind of works. It’s completely useless at range, so forget about using it to discover Roman coins in your back garden, but used up close (you can imagine you work at airport security if it helps) it did manage to detect a number of metal objects I had concealed about my person.
Apparently it uses some combination of your phone’s antennae and compass to detect the tiny electromagnetic disturbance caused by the close proximity of metal. So there you go. It won’t scan this QR code though:

AFAIK android phones have some sort of magnet sensor. the milestone/droid for example, if you put it near a magnet, it will start up the car dock app automatically.
