In a quite spectacular show of poor timing, Vodafone has today pushed out an unannounced over-the-air update for its branded HTC Desire – but it IS NOT the arrival of Android 2.2 users have been hoping to see.
Instead, today’s Vodafone Desire update changes the splash screen, alters the Home page and generally updates the “branding” and certain Vodafone apps on the Desire – which is rather frustrating for users of the Android phone, to say the least.
Here’s an email we’ve just received from a rather miffed reader:
“Vodafone put out an update for the HTC Desire, but much to the annoyance of all the people on Vodafone’s forums the update wasn’t actually Froyo. It was just a load of bloatware from Vodafone, including amazing features such as a new Vodafone Splash screen and whole load of pointless Vodafone applications and bookmarks. A lot of very angry Desire users on VF basically. Thought you might just be amused by this anecdote, that is anyone might be amused, unless they are using the Desire on Vodafone!”
The fish is not amused:

A slim and glamorous phone from Sony Ericsson, with the sharpest display around. It’s no powerhouse and the screen’s not the biggest out there, but we don’t mind. Because it’s cute.
LG’s first glasses-free 3D phone is a heavy, fat monster, with a clever 3D effect that works rather well. As a smartphone, though, it’s heavy and underwhelming.
A very shiny thing from Sony Ericsson, with a 3.7″ screen and Android 2.3.3 inside. But is it exciting enough to win fans in today’s spec-obsessed market? Can man live on one core alone?
INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ August 3, 2010When will companies learn? They should be servicing the needs of USERS, not servicing their OWN needs.
Updating branding of 2.1 when everyone else is working on 2.2 is outrageous. If anyone has any sense, then they needs to shop elsewhere for a phone operator next time (not that there is too much choice anymore, now that each seems to be a sub-division of another).

/ August 3, 2010Easy enough, go to XDA or Modaco, root your phone (it’s REALLY easy to do now) remove the vodafone bloatware crap and install a nice rooted stock or community ROM, these ROMS are made by dedicated people with far more enthusiasm than the wonks the big companies hire.
