Uh-oh! Orange’s official representative on Twitter has just issued a little bit of bad news for HTC Desire owners who bought their phones through the network – the Android 2.2 update for the popular Android phone has been pushed back until mid-September.
Apparently there’s been a delay in getting the update from HTC, whatever that may mean. Someone didn’t check their emails? Here’s the little announcement:
“Android fans there has been a delay in receiving the 2.2 Froyo update from HTC, & we now expect it to be available mid-Sep. Apologies”
And as a quick follow up:
“would like to point out the delay on 2.2 Froyo is not related to Orange services on the device”
Here’s a picture of something orange and not very happy:
Bad luck, Orange users. Perhaps spend the weekend reading up on the “debranding” process?

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ August 27, 2010Without this blog, I wouldn’t be able to keep up with which update to Android was not yet available for various phones I don’t have.
Does Gary own every Android phone on every network and this is why he’s finding the energy to care about such things?

/ August 27, 2010Orange continue to be completely rubbish; I’m still waiting, a week later, for the 24 hour callback that I absolutely definitely would get, for certain. There is no communication and Connor is a useless twat of the first order whose only interaction with customers appears to be telling them when iphones will be back in stock.

/ August 27, 2010Totally agree. I came to orange for the desire thinking it’d be ok. How wrong I was. The network is constantly going tits up. I thought things would be good with the tmob merger but I guess not yet. Everything everywhere?? Erm…

/ August 27, 2010As an Orange branded Hero owner, I was wondering if they’d handle this release as embarrasingly badly as they did our 2.1 update. In the end, one sole Orange employee on a forum was the only reliable source of information, and that was basically off his own back.
“would like to point out the delay on 2.2 Froyo is not related to Orange services on the device” smacks of them trying to avoid not sounding like they don’t know what they’re doing again. In the end, I was left with an impression of a company whose internal departments really don’t talk to each other very much.

/ August 27, 2010Yet again Orange showing their true inability to do anything. After weeks of waiting for customer services to come back to me after mailing me about the completely wrong phone, we now get a thinly disguised excuse that its HTC’s fault. I guess that Vodafone actually have the HTC office number as they got their update. If anyone works for Vodafone could u please pass it on to the useless Twats at Orange.

/ August 27, 2010“would like to point out the delay on 2.2 Froyo is not related to Orange services on the device”
Which is utter bollocks, as otherwise they could just pass the mainstream HTC update down to Orange customers…
Do they think Smartphone users are idiots or something? Did Orange learn NOTHING from the Vodaphone debacle?
jerome
/ August 30, 2010total agree why dont they just let us have the htc genic rom just put alittle boot logo on and stop putting all the crap on it we could of had it a week later christ if macado can cook ya a rom in a day max how cant a tech team at orange do the same cause the little beavers are sitting ruining a great phone os system like taking gtalk off, add loads of crap game demos putting app and music store. anyone want tom.alexander@orange.com email address oops he may be able to help you fire some questions at him you do get a reply, but you wont like it they recon there improving our experience.
xeno
/ August 27, 2010Typical orange, you can bet it is down to them cramming all the shite bloatware of the day into their rom release. If they say its not cause of that, you can bet it is.
Time to root this phone and get away from this kind of nonsense.
Nick
/ August 27, 2010Any news when (cough) Virgin gets the update ? I emailed them but they dont bother replying
Mart
/ August 27, 2010Wonder what excuse we’ll all get mid-september!!
Desire
/ August 27, 2010Thanks Orange this is just what I needed to hear. Well you’ve just lost one customer, and same could go for Android if Micsorost is able to release updates ontime and keep OEM’s/Carriers noses out of it.
Good Bye Orange.
Desire
/ August 27, 2010Microsoft*
jerome
/ August 30, 2010just get ya phone from carephonewarehouse its a genic phone no branding sim free youll get the updates as htc release them no need to leave orange or any net work for that matter just dont get a branded phone.they all put crap on or make a gold card and debrand but youll loose your warrenty
Desire
/ August 30, 2010Thanks mate, I know that but the thing is Orange have poor reception/network coverage, they are also way too expensive compared to the other networks and are just plain lazy. Am getting tired of androids fragmentation too, before the desire I had the hero and it took too long to update to 2.1 by which time I had already got the desire. Think I’ll wait for Windows Phone 7.
Mart
/ August 27, 2010…. and I wonder of HTC knows that they are getting the blame?
jerome
/ August 30, 2010bet not
paulplumb
/ August 27, 2010Well said penhapus. I have been with Orange for many years and I can confirm their service has deteriorated to the point of no return. I will not be renewing my contract. I have the weekend off and will be spending it debranding my phone. Happy days.
michael mcdaid
/ August 28, 2010Dead right, I have been with Orange for over 12 years but the last year the level of customer service has been terrible. After this I will be never with them again. From the best to worst carrier in the UK in no time. They blame everyone else and god forbid u ask customer service a question, they never answer.
David
/ August 28, 2010Wow, Orange have surpassed themselves on the BS O’meter.
What they really meant to release was –
“We are having difficulty ramming our bloatware into the finely crafted Froyo release that HTC released weeks ago. Be rest assured that our overblown update will soon be inflicted upon Orange Mugs/ customers and they will not have the ability to remove aforementioned bloat.”
Oh Orange Customers I feel your pain. (But Froyo IS worth the wait!)
Mike
/ August 28, 2010@David
It’s not worth the wait. It’s worth Rooting and upgrading now. Sod Orange and their shite approach to Customer Care.

/ August 29, 2010@Mike
Thanks for the link – Good Guide.
Fortunately I didn’t have to root, I have an unbranded phone. I got my T-mobile upgrade and was able to pick up an unbranded phone from my local Carphone Whorehouse, and therefore recieved the OTA upgrade ;-)

/ August 28, 2010Well, I ordered a Desire on Thursday, from mobiles.co.uk and it arrived yesterday, and it shows 2.2!! And yes, I can move some apps to the sd card and its got flash pre loaded!!!! Am so jelous cos its for my partner and my milestone is still waiting for updates never mind 2.2!!!
Mark
/ August 28, 2010Just another example of how customers are lied to……..
“Yeah it will be out Friday………were all just having training on it……….Yeah you will get a text………”
Let me translate this for you………”Just get off my phone line so i can carry on talking to my mates and update my status on facebook”
Conrad Edward
/ August 28, 2010Perhaps, with the Orange/TMobile merger, they are going to make one single release rather than two?
asif
/ August 28, 2010i am a orange pay monthly customer, i have a branded desire, after hearing the news about the delay i decided to ruu my desire(thankfully!) i am now running 2.2 froyo on a de branded desire. best bet is orange wont have the update ready till xmas.

/ August 28, 2010To Mike,
The URL you supplied;

Is this compatible with Orange branded Desires? I’ve heard all sorts of nightmare stories about bricking handsets, but the more I read the more decieved I feel by all the complete Orange BS I’m being fed!! so I’m feeling compelled to want to do something about it
I take it this update makes it impossible for OTA updates afterward? If so then where would I have to go to get the update? I had a quick look on the HTC site but didn’t spot a firmware update file..
Yours
Thouroughly cheesed off (mostly by Conor bloody Maples)
gurpreet
/ August 29, 2010I think its better to root your phone.
And get rid of orange shit.
And install foryo ota on it.
Turbohobbit
/ August 30, 2010I debranded last Wednesday and I can honestly say I’m darned glad I did.
markyboy
/ August 30, 2010Can you give some details on how you debranded ??? i keep reading nightmare stories of people having problems doing it with Orange handsets
Turbohobbit
/ August 31, 2010Sure. Read through this thread: http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/148932-froyo-ruu-update-available.html
I can do it, anyone can!
MarkG
/ August 31, 2010Just to point out to people, you don’t need to root the phone, you just need to debrand it…
Debranding means you lose all the Orange customisations, and can run the standard HTC releases of firmware. Rooting is something additional to this. (and mosre risky).
Debranding is just a case of crearing a goldcard and then running the HTC RRU update (the update you do from your PC), having the goldcard in your phone whilst you do this, prevents the downgrade and phone branding mismatch checks.
Gary C
/ August 31, 2010That caught me out, too. All I did was goldcard my Desire and all of a sudden the 2.2 ROM was installable without any rooting whatsoever. So easy. Still made my heart pound, though!
Bulman
/ August 31, 2010I wouldn’t be too dissappointed if you cant get 2.2 yet.
I got it as an over the air update from HTC and now I seem to have lost all my previous e-mails and new ones seem to self delete or are viewable for a few seconds only. Strangely the only 1 email that is in my inbox is from HTC regarding my message 10GBCW36ENA000224, which has no written info, so it either isn’t working or HTC didn’t bother to write anything in reply to my 2.2 issues? Also noticing forced close on certain websites such as BBC news when clicking on certain stories such as ‘Vettel’s errors ‘rule out title’. Perhaps Orange are aware of some problems and are doing their customers a favour. I would happily have 2.1 back for now as at least it’s reliable for basics such as e-mail & internet.
