HTC’s released a new update for its HTC Desire today, taking the phone’s firmware up to version number 2.10.405.2. It doesn’t change a great deal, simply updating the Gmail app, altering the Russian keyboard layout and applying a mysterious “Android update patch” that may or may not change other things.
Here’s the confirmation:
You can now download the latest software update for new features and improved performance. It won’t delete any of your content and we’d recommend using a Wi-Fi connection as this is a large update. If not, standard data connection charges may apply. Any questions? Contact us via www.htc.com. After installing the update, you can confirm a successful update by confirming the Software number (From the Home Screen go to MENU> Settings> About Phone> Software Information> Software number). The new Software number will be 2.10.405.2
Update Information: 1.Android OS update patch 2.Enhanced multi inbox Gmail support 3.Improved Russia keyboard layout
Read all about it over on HTC’s support site. But there’s not much point as we’ve just pasted it all up there for you.
The fish will get back to you with more information once he’s in range of a wi-fi hotspot and has applied the update.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ September 9, 2010I really hope that this is why there is a delay with Orange pushing out the update rather than because they are shovelling bloatware crApps on the ROM.
Vince
/ September 9, 2010Just installed it. Still don’t see any support for Gmail’s Priority Inbox. I actually don’t see any difference in the Gmail app… and yes i have the right software number.
Simon
/ September 9, 2010That’ll be because the update doesn’t add support for priority inbox.
Thomas
/ September 9, 2010I guess I’ve got to wait until Vodafone does his job (again)?
Rik
/ September 9, 2010One noticeable change is the addition of the voice button to they keyboard enabling you to press and hold the button in order to use the voice functionality to write instead of having to use the Google voice search app.
Rik
/ September 9, 2010It also appears that full flash support is included in this update. My Desire shows the Adobe Flash version as “Adobe Flash Player 10.1 version 10.1.72.7″.

/ September 9, 2010Is that EXPANSYS for all your mobile needs? EXPANSYS the mobile phone retailer that comes with the Eurodroid seal of approval
I hope you’re getting a lot of cash or at least a free phone for such shameless whoring :)

/ September 9, 2010Hu guys,
I got an HTC Desire unlocked from T mobile here in the netherlands and I would like to know how to upgrade it to froyo.
Thanks in advance
Bart
/ September 9, 2010Since the froyo update I (and many other people) had issues syncing a second gmail account. I could only sync it manually. With this update it seems that this has been fixed. After booting the phone I immediately got a notification about new e-mails in my second account.

/ September 9, 2010This “minor update” caused my Desire to display “error” when trying to use wifi so my only option was to get the “2.09.405.8″ version back. After spending hours to get it back the wifi started to work again and I can now install all the stuff back since I tried factory resets, etc.. before doing the flash operation back to older version.
Anyone else having same problem? Or at least think carefully before installing this update. Cheers from Finland.
Brian
/ September 9, 2010Me too. Just did the update, saw the error for Wi-Fi and got online to see if anyone else had the problem. No fix for me yet.
wah
/ September 10, 2010Could you please tell me in detail how you fixed this problem because I am having the same problem as you. thank you
Hiski
/ September 10, 2010Hi,
Well I fixed mine using methods found here:
http://www.broadbandgenie.co.uk/blog/20100822-how-debrand-htc-desire-update-froyo
1) Created a Goldcard
2) Did the RUU-based 2.09.405.8 flash
Please read the whole post carefully as this has risks as well. But anyway I have done this couple of times without any problems. I did the de-branding from T-Mobile to get the update faster, so I already maybe cancelled my warranty and had an easy decision to go back to older version ;-)
Hiski
/ September 10, 2010Have to add here that please note that using this method all data at phone will be wiped out…so please backup all the stuff you need first if going this way.
And I believe HTC has to do something to fix this anyway – maybe another update or something. But sure this is a software bug.

/ September 10, 2010Just had a response from HTC. They are aware of the Wi-Fi problem and are working on an update to fix it.

/ September 11, 2010I just wished I saw this before I did the OTA upgrade, don’t know how this got released with a major software bug.

/ September 15, 2010Hi
i just installed the new update and have the same problem. very annoying!
too bad i didn’t read your comment before installing it…. i got no idea what to do now
deva
/ September 15, 2010same here! HTC could only advise a factory reset which does not fix the problem, will call them back in the morning and see what they say. not happy!
Yaron
/ September 15, 2010i e-mailed them. hopefully, they will answer soon… i’ll tell you when they do. let me know if they give you a good solution on the phone.

/ September 9, 2010Can see it now – we finally get the 2.2 update from Orange and then have to wait another 6 months for this update!!
Thomas
/ September 10, 2010Haha! :)

/ September 11, 2010so has the update been pulled ? as I can’t get the update on my unbranded desire?

/ September 18, 2010Froyo update for t-mobile includes the new minor update. And shows the firmware version as 2.20 something and shows the software as Froyo 2.2. Do I have a more current update?

/ September 19, 2010I wish I han’t updated when I got the notifier to say I could on my phone. WIFI not working just get error, wish i had done a bit more research before doing it, but certainly didn’t expect to get any problems. Earlier post mentions HTC aware “Just had a response from HTC. They are aware of the Wi-Fi problem and are working on an update to fix it.” Anyone got any news on this. i have looked on the HTC website and no mention of this problem – terrible. I have also never heard of a goldcard, what on earth is that, I am just a bog standard user, who sholdn’t have to be trawling round forums to find out whats wrong after an update on my HTC phone!!!!!

/ September 19, 2010I applied the update last night to my unbranded two week old HTC Desire and also now have the wifi problem. I contacted support this morning and rather than saying they they were aware of the problem, or that they are working on an update to fix it, they replied straight away with “Ok we will require the device to come into the repair centre to get the ROM re-flashed can you please call +44-845-890-0079 to arrange collection of the device we are sorry that you have experienced a problem and we will try our hardest to get this resolved with a repair”.
I would advise anyone who hasn’t already done so not to install this update.
bobrick42
/ September 19, 2010I fell for the WiFi bug too, reverted back to 1.21 because it was the only ROM i had and reinstalled both the 2.2 OTA update and the latest one that caused the bug. As I have previously rooted my Desire simply to debrand from Orange crApps, I re-did all these updates with the goldcard in the phone this time (which had previously solved radio issues with the 2.2 OTA) and….. WiFi still not working.
On another note, my mate just got the TMobile 2.2 update this morning, his WiFi works but 90% of his apps are in German??? Having contacted TMobile, they’ve released the German update ‘by mistake’ and will be rereleasing over the next few days. So, I have no WiFi, Phil can’t use his phone because he doesn’t speak German and neither of us are happy bunnies. You would hope that major multinational companies would thoroughly check and debug before releasing, but it would appear this is not the case. What joy!

/ September 20, 2010same here, I wish I saw this earlier.
Next time before any update, I will look around the Internet first…

/ September 20, 2010seems like you have to insert the Cold Card every time you do the OTA update

/ September 20, 2010Same problem for me too. It was pushed out to me today & broke wi-fi. Is there any more news on an easy fix?
snads
/ September 20, 2010Whats a gold card, i keep seeing references to this, and why don’t they tell you to do this on the screen before pushing out update! The instructions were to download via WIFI which I duly did.
I e-mailed HTC, got a reply back quite quickly – “they are aware of the problem and doing what they can to fix it” – errmmm why did they not warn you of this before pushing out the update or more to the point why is an update being pushed out that breaks WIFI ??!?
They suggested i did a hard reboot, which didn’t work (as i thought but tried it anyway you never know) When I told them of this they have basically said I need to ring them and get it sent back – “Thank you for contacting HTC. We can resolve your problem but unfortunately it needs to be booked in for repair. We cannot give you a quote or a full diagnosis until it is at our repair centre. At that stage you can then choose if you wish to go ahead with the repair or if you wish to have your phone returned. If you wish to have your phone returned then you would need to pay a fee of approximately £20 for courier costs and the evaluation. Devices repaired under warranty are free of charge. There will be no quotation and the device will go straight into repair after diagnostics. Devices are considered under warranty if the warranty period and has a manufacturing defect. If it’s due to user damage (e.g. the device has been dropped) then it is not under warranty. Booking the repair can only be done over the phone……..
My phone is under warranty, I’ve only had it a month, but my problem is due to an update they pushed out and offered to me, so is that a manufacturing problem?? hope so, I’m certainly not paying them to fix the problem they caused.

/ September 21, 2010I’ve updated today to what HTC proposed to me, 2.10.405.2. Wifi works without any problems for me

/ September 22, 2010This is what HTC have advised me to do. I haven’t done it yet because I can live without wifi for the moment. Has anyone else done what they suggest successfully? Is it likely that a fix will come out that doesn’t involve losing all data & settings??
Thanks for contacting HTC. We apologize for the inconvenience that you are having with your wifi after upgrading. To help resolve the issue, please perform a hard reset by following the steps provided below. NOTE: After a hard reset, the device is restored to its default settings—the way it was when you first purchased it and turned it on. Any applications you installed, data you entered, and settings you customized on your device will be lost. Only the operating system and other pre-installed applications will remain. Make sure to back up important data you have on the phone before you reset the phone. 1. Power off the device by removing and reinstalling the battery. 2. Long press and hold the Volume Down button and then briefly press and release the Power button. 3. Continue holding the Volume Down button until you see the 3 Android images on the screen and then release the Volume Down button. 4. Press the Volume Down button twice to select CLEAR STORAGE, and thenpress the Power button once. Updates and fixes that are being rolled out are dependent to the phone’s IMEI number and country of origin. After verifying the serial number that you had provided, it appears that your phone was shipped out from Thailand. If hard reset fails, kindly get in touch with our Thailand support for further assistance. To contact them, you may send them an email via http://www.htc.com/asia/CS_Mail.aspx. Please make sure to choose Thailand as the country so you will be routed to the right country of support. / September 22, 2010I have just done the update and have the same issue! WIFI just says Error :(
At least my battery lasts longer! But I wouldn’t mind having the option of Wifi as my data plan is taking a hammering! Anyone had any luck with a fix?

/ September 23, 2010This minor update changed the linux kernel version, but did not include a bcm wireless driver recompiled against the new kernel. The existing driver won’t load.
This problem has existed for two weeks; for some reason it appears that HTC won’t fix it (because it seems very easy to fix, yet it is not fixed). Why is this not affecting everyone?

/ October 3, 2010New phone downloaded update. Wi- Fi now reports error. Does anyone know if HTC are going to put out a fix?
If not what is the best thing to do?
Thanks

/ October 9, 20102.2 sucks…
first of all, wifi was broken after update, then PC could’n connect anymore.
have been searching the internet for days now…
conclusion : HTC’s driver for the wifi-card is incompatible with android 2.2 and HTCsync doesn’t communicate with hte desire android 2.2
great job HTC, the 2 things I vallue the most are now broken
should have stayed with the 2.1…
Jeff
/ October 20, 2010Do not install 2.2, it killed my phone. Just said Network unavailable. HTC Tech Support unable to fix and told me to return to shop for repair. I had to send the phone away for a week to get fixed. It came back with 2.2 installed and calls working again, but now I get the dreaded Wifi Error. I tried a hard reset, and clearing the cache, but didn’t work.
HTC Australia Tech Support is hopeless, they don’t seem to know anything, and not being supplied with up to date information by HTC.
Now I have to send my phone away for repair again. Not happy Jan!
Nick
/ October 30, 2010Finally got 2.2 to load, had to use an XP machine as windows 7 caused the synch to drop out every time i started the upgrade.
Now, surprise surprise, the wireless is not operating. Done the hard reset., no good. Does anyone know where I can source an earlier version to downgrade to?
