Orange launches Android 2.2 update for its HTC Desire

Welcome to the party, Orange HTC Desire users! In a little tweet yesterday, Orange’s internet spokesman confirmed the arrival of the “FroYo” Android 2.2 update for HTC Desires locked to the network. It’s there for your downloading now.

If you can’t see it, set the clock forward a few weeks and do a manual check for updates. Here’s the momentous paragraph itself:

froyo orange htc desire

That’s it. Hopefully it’s not in German and won’t break your wi-fi, unlike other rather botched OS updates of late. Fingers crossed. Link via Techradar.

  1. This is so scary ALL the UK carriers have messed up their releases so far – will Orange be the first to get things right? Im gonna hold off downloading it for now until everyone else has confirmed its OK. But its about time we all got this release!!

How do you “set the clock forward a few weeks” as soon as I do this the system resets it to today’s date (whether or not I have ticked “use network settings” on the date ad time option).

No update for me yet (or anyone I know with a desire) but I’ll try again tomorrow evening. Do we know what bloatware… I mean Orange services and branding is on the ROM yet?

  7. I think most of us are gonna have to wait, heres what it says on the orange twitter:

@CKrypt1 Froyo is available to everyone on a HTC Desire on Orange UK. It mightn’t always appear on your updates straight away due to the amount of traffic going through HTC’s servers.

  8. I’ve been manually checking for the last 24 hours, but still nothing. I will forgive them the extra delay on the understanding that the release is perfect, mmkay Orange? ;)

If any one finds out how to move the clock forward 2weeks and keep it there with out it changing can you post it for all to see as it looks like we are all having the same problem!

Hmm… I may have made a bit of a mistake, there. The clock-adjusting trick would force an update check on the HTC Hero, but maybe it’s not possible to fool a Desire?

This is very strange. My partners UK Orange Desire arrived 6th September with 2.2 already pre-loaded! It came via mobiles.co.uk. Am very jelous as still no word re my Milestone.

Ah, well Mobiles.co.uk would’ve been shipping an unbranded model with an Orange SIM in it. This update is for branded phones bought through Orange itself.

Nice that it came pre-loaded, though.

  12. Nope, not seen anything here despite checking several times a day. One interesting thing I found was that when I phoned HTC a couple of weeks ago to check on the status of the rollout onto Orange (yes I am a nosy sod). I gave them my serial number and they told me my phone was Spanish!
So it seems that orange were redirecting their allocation of stock back to the UK due to the high demand. I ‘hope’ this has no undue effect on my handsets ability to accept the OTA when it finally decides to want to find it!

    @Scott

Unsync your facebook and/or twitter accounts as it uses that to change your date back.

I’ve done this, date remains pushed forward but still no update :o( Maybe you’ll have better luck.

  15. I have been trying for the first time tonight as I havent heard any bad reports about the update….. the reson why….. cos nobody can download it!!!
Does anyone know anybody who has this download from Orange?

I have read somewhere that its about 86 megs in size – does that mean I have to delete all my apps to install the update then re-download all my apps again afterwards?

i have read that it needs around 25 mb internal memory and it uses this to download. apparently it is a smart download and won’t download if you don’t have enough memory!

  17. Well I managed to make the date on my phone to go out to October using a combination of Airplane mode on, WiFi on, Mobile Network off and the change took. However when you then go to check for an update the orange servers kindly reset you back to todays date and I’m still getting the ‘your phone is up to date’ message.

    I have noticed that the update news is now official on the main Orange website;

    http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/personal/462521

But we still get the old excuse about the amount of traffic causing delays.

How much traffic must there be? I tried at 2am and 4am this morning!

Are Orange Desire users a bunch of Insomniacs??

  18. At work (Nottingham) i managed to get the update screen and chose to download via 3G. It failed to download.
Tried at home (Sheffield) multiple times via Wifi and no luck, even at 6am.
As an orange customer since year dot, i’m so tired of them. Traffic my arse!
If they just came out and explained what’s happening people wouldn’t mind, instead of some PR bloke on twitter.

  19. Spam clicied check updates for about an hour yesterday then I tried at 2am then 7am (this morning) for the update and still nothing. If the traffic is so busy because of people downloading the update how come noone on any blogs/forums seem to have it yet? Who are all these mysterious people getting Froyo?

  20. On the plus side, from the Orange website:

“Following feedback we have removed the Orange homescreen and Homescreen Selector on this handset. We have also added G-Talk back in.”

    Hooray!

“Our standard Orange Apps have been added to the software, including: Orange Maps, Orange Games & Orange Messenger.”

…oh. Maybe we’ll be able to delete them this time. Or at least move them to SD?

this is for every one waiting for the update on orange i had to contact htc as orange dont have a clue as the updat does not come from them! here’s what they said:- In regards to the Desire Android 2.2 Froyo update. We will begin rolling out the Android 2.2 update for your HTC Desire very soon. We cannot give you an exact date for each device. We look forward to rolling out the update to your phone shortly. The update will come over the air only and is not manually done. Updates will not all be sent out at the same time and are being rolled out by HTC servers. There is no way to make this happen faster. You will receive a notification prompt on your screen once the update is ready for your device.
i hope this answers alot of peoples questions

    Reply
  23. That answer is the generic one HTC roll out based on generic firmware releases and is nothing to do with the buggered about version we’re likely to receive from Orange.

When HTC release a Firmware they give it to the operator who may want to ‘configure’ it to fit their purpose (ie to lessen our enjoyment experience). At this point HTC relinquish any say over release date / content / quality/ anything as it’s upto the provider to say what you want and don’t want.

what makes it really annoying for me though is the fact that ‘certain’ Orange PR people stated that the delay was down do HTC. It clearly wasn’t! due to the fact that it’s been available to unbranded handsets for the past several weeks.

    C**p!

  24. I suspect that it’s a combination of the two. AIUI the updates are processed through HTC and not Orange, but the update is provided to HTC by Orange to put on their servers for the Orange phones. The question is whether or not they are staggering it based on IMEI or something like that. My guess is that the server is throttled in some way and that we’ll just have to be patient, much as it pains me.

    Reply
  25. To clarify, steps for OS updates (AIUI IANAL YMMV HAND ;) ):

    1. Google releases update
    2. HTC develops it’s update to Sense and other bundled stuff
    3. HTC release update – unbranded phones can now update
    4. Providers develop their update based on HTCs update – branding, preinstalled apps, etc
    5. Provider return update to HTC for approval
    6. HTC test provider’s update and approve it for release
    7. HTC make it available for release to that providers customers

Therefore, Conor was right (potentially) in the delay being with HTC, if we were at stage 6. It will be interesting to see what happens with some of the phone manufacturers (I’m thinking ZTE) who just release stock Android on their phones, and whether this speeds up the release cycle.

    From the orange website http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/personal/519269
    says

If you are running software version number 1.15.61.10 then HTC has recently advised us you will first need to update your devices to 1.22.61.1.

HTC will be making the 1.22.61.1 update available early next week. Once you have updated to 1.22.61.1, you can then update to 2.17.61.2 via the method described above. To check to see which software version your device is running. From homescreen – Menu Key > Settings > Software information. The number you require is listed as the fifth entry and is labelled “Software number”.

There you have it NOT everyone can update their desire until NEXT WEEK sometime if at all!

I’m in exactly the same boat… ROM it and risk ruining my phone… or wait. The option is that you wait, and then if it’s full of Orange shit, then ROM it.. I am considering that…

Got my full update a couple of days ago. The keypad is SHIT, I dont’ think I’ll get used to it, but other features are much better, facebook integration is perfect now and even though I’ve noticed no difference in battery power, I am defo using WiFi more!

Oh, one thing. Orange have NOT got rid of their awful bloatware! All the demo games are still there and I can’t delete them!! Not so much a problem right now as I don’t need the space they take up but the Orange maps NEVER works and is shit anyway!!!

Thanks guys!! I get that now!

Gary C – I used to use Orange maps, until I downloaded GoogleMaps, and I tell you, Orange Maps never worked for me once! I rang Orange Customer Service about it, and they said their servers had been down for 2 months – something they failed to tell their customers about.

Plus, to load it, you have to click on a series of disclaimers EVERY time you use it, waste of time compared to Google Maps 0.5 second load time!

Orange won’t listen though, I know enough people who have blasted them for their awful apps and it won’t make a different. They have SUCH a tight control over competitor marketing that any change is unlikley!
