UK retailer Carphone Warehouse is claiming to have the LG Optimus Pad in stock and ready to send out – with a comically astronomical RRP of £799 attached to it. That’s the 3D premium in full effect.
While the site says the tablet is in stock, it’s actually listed under the mobile phones category – and the product image is broken.
So hopefully this is all just some terrible mix up and the proper price tag will be along shortly. Check it out for yourself here. Link via CSP and Twitter.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ April 30, 2011I think most decent Android tablet manufacturers are pricing to fail, there again, I think most are over-speccing their offerings.
At the moment, the most attractive offering I’m seeing is the Dell Streak, under £300 (just) and a reasonable feature set for the price. It’s not like I’m going to be watching HD quality films on a 7″ tablet, so the screen is fine. I have a rooted Android phone so I can tether if I really need to, and I already have a netbook if I need a larger screen and keyboard.

/ April 30, 2011LG are definitely going to fail with this one spectacularly. Yes, it may well do 3D but who the hell cares? Even the Nintendo 3DS is being discounted already (PC World £197 today) because its not selling well. 3D is not the magic button to charge a premium price for a Pad/Tablet of any kind.
As for the competition – I have just picked up an Asus Eee Pad Transformer (excluding the keyboard/dock) for £379 which stacks up completely with a WiFi iPad in terms of price. If you’re after a non-iOS device the Eee Pad Transformer is a superb alternative, very well specified and very keenly priced against its competition (the Xoom being £100 more expensive!).
Will LG learn? Probably not. Nor with the other manufacturers who are trying to raise the price bar for these devices.
