The Android Market application has been STEALTH UPDATED to allow users to filter content, with new settings to show/hide apps based on their offensiveness rating now available. Shield your eyes from the dodgy stuff when browsing the Android Market.
We believe this has been gradually filtering out to Android users for some time following last week’s web-based Market update, but here it is anyway:
Not entirely sure of that rating system, though. Surely a standard age-based listing would be a bit easier to understand? And it’s quite easy to turn off. So it’s… not much use. Or are we, as ever, missing the point?
Thanks to reader Tony for the tip.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ May 17, 2011If we like toilet humour, do we choose ‘Low maturity’?
Also I like the way we get to choose both ‘Low maturity’ and ‘High maturity’ while leaving out ‘Medium maturity’. That’s unless they’ve done the UI wrong there, which I suspect is the case.

/ May 17, 2011It’s got a PIN-based locking system, so that you could, in theory, lock down the content on your kids’ phones.

/ May 17, 2011Two points:
1. As to what Rik Hemsley was wondering, it actually automatically selects all ratings lower than the one you choose, preventing you from doing that, but yeah radio buttons might be more logical.
2. Not sure if the post author noticed the padlock button which lets you lock the setting with a PIN… although I wonder if clearing Market data might just override that (unless it’s synced to Google’s servers).

/ May 18, 2011You have to love the Google approach to updates. I wonder how many people will even notice the updated settings. Of those who will understand the strange settings ui and guess what the padlock means. Will the lucky few overlap with the people who actually want this functionality?

/ May 17, 2011This has been in place since last week, at least it has on my phone so was this a gradual roll out?
