Mozilla releases Firefox 5.0 beta for Android – but still no Flash Player support

Mozilla has updated its Android browser test release, letting us sample version 5.0 of the alternate web window via the Android Market. It’s a separate install to the current Firefox, offering claims of speed improvements and better scrolling, plus bug fixes and compatibility with the ever-popular SwiftKey alternate keyboard.

It’s a rather large 13MB download, though, so is a luxurious install if you’ve got the space.

Haven’t tried it. Gave up on the desktop version of Firefox some time ago, so not particularly enthusiastic for the mobile release.

Meh, it’s still really rubbish compared to Opera Mobile 11 on Android, which is really nice to use, VERY fast and a tiny footprint.

I can have Opera Mobile 11 AND Opera Mini 6 AND have 6MB space left over for the space bloaty old Firefox is…

You’ll like this. I’ve started using Opera, as for some weird reason the stock browser on my phone won’t remember passwords any more which drives me nuts. Opera is great indeed.

        Opera Mobile or Opera Mini?

I have both.. Opera Mobile for day to day use (it’s the full web, with the same rendering engine as the full Opera Desktop browser, with very comprehensive HTML5 support, JIT JS and hardware acceleration), and I keep Opera Mobile for when I can’t get a 3G signal, or using my phone abroad on limited data plans.

Firefox still has room for improvements. Stock browser still rocks. Opera mobile is also good.

  4. Actually, with it moved to the SD card, it only takes up 100-odd kb of phone memory. It’s also got quite a nice interface and fairly nippy page loads. The only thing keeping me from using it as my default is the godawful initial startup time.
