The UK arm of O2 has decided to take up an exclusive with “entry level” supermarket phone manufacturer Alcatel, with the company’s Android powered OT990 set to arrive as an exclusive on the network this summer.
The OT990 sounds OK for a budget phone, to be fair, offering a 3.5″ screen, 5megapixel camera and Android 2.2 at its core. This must be the “aspirational” Android phone Alcatel mentioned last year.
O2 currently has the phone listed for release in July (although its Facebook page says August), and claims an upgrade to Android 2.3 will arrive “later this year”. Could be the Orange San Francisco of 2011, if Alcatel hasn’t cut any corners internally.
The OT990 will also be competing with the Vodafone SMART in the “funky” stakes, with the network’s Facebook page revealing a selection of cover colours. Can’t wait. I’ll have one in just black, please. Miserable Black. Dark Black. Whatever you want to call it.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ June 2, 2011Specs aren’t bad either. 600Mhz CPU, 320×480 capacitive 3.5inch screen. 5mp camera. Better than the Vodafone Smart.
