As well as the hugely important patent battles between the hardware manufacturers for control of Android’s billions, the software side of the OS is also coming under attack from those after a share of the cash generated by the mobile system’s roaring successes.
Independent company Lodsys has been making lots of noise suing app developers it believes are violating its app payment patents, with Angry Birds maker Rovio the latest to join the list and be hit by demands for damages and an injunction against sale.
According to the Guardian, Lodsys is a one-man operation that happens to hold many software patents granted between 1999 and 2009 – one of which is a system that lets users buy content inside an app. Lodsys is currently suing giants like Electronic Arts, Take Two and Square Enix for a medley of infringements.
For further reading, bury yourself in the Lodsys blog for a few hours. It even wants to bring Apple to justice, so isn’t all bad.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.
