Introduction to myself, a new writer

Hello all. I’m the newest writer for Eurodroid. My name’s Philip Oakley – I’m a 17 year old Android enthusiast, currently using a HTC Sensation. I’m UK based, like Gary. I’m going to be going into Sixth Form in September ’11 – studying English Literature, English Language, Graphics and Biology. (Yes, I like English, and I’m a Grammar Nazi!)

My job at Eurodroid is going to be writing editorials (analysis on the Android world, mostly), guides (like ‘How to flash a ROM on your Android’ and ’20 things you can do with a rooted Android’), some app reviews, hopefully a few phone reviews, and possibly some other things. I’m also learning Android app development, so I may write a Eurodroid app somewhere down the line.

So yeah, that’s me. Any questions, ask in the comments. But no ‘How is a baby made?’. You can ask your mother that.

Oh, and I have Twitter. I post Android related stuff on there (for the past few days it’s been mostly about the HP TouchPad, which I’ve been trying to get for the past week, without much success).

No related posts.

Should ‘grammar’ have a capital ‘g’?

Typos. The plural of typo is typos.

You are going to regret that grammar Nazi thing.

If “typo” is short for “typographical error” then I think you can write “typo’s” to denote the elision.

Also as Gary says, Grammar Nazi was being used in this sense as a title, hence the title case.

          Welcome, Mr. Oakley.

If you’re calling yourself a Grammar Nazi, then that’s OK.

Twitter link doesn’t work, though. Bloody kids.

Well that’s it, I’m out of here. I’m not gonna sit here and be told about shizzle by some spotty 17 year old.
I want my UK orientated (oriented?) android news delivered by some old fogey of at least 35. Failing that a dolly bird with big boobs.

    [Cough]
Following a comma with ‘and’? Might want to change that before some smartarse turns up…
    ;)
How long has “Graphics” been a subject at school? Is that pixel-pushing, Design or what was know as CDT/Tech drawing back when I was in school?
    God, I feel old now.

Speaking of which, a feature on what you can still do/just about get away with with a really old android like, say, a Hero, would be good. Or optimizing to make the most of it, anyway.

    • Nah, we still have Tech/Design Technology. Graphics is mainly using Photoshop to make stuff; last year we made a pop-up book. In Sixth Form we make a model building out of foam board, making the textures and interiors ourselves and in the second year, we can do anything we want…

Thanks for the feature suggestion, added it to my list :)

      “what was know as”

      Hoist by my own petard.
Or by the text box being bloody fiddly on my Hero, as I put it.

Plus, the wife informs me you CAN follow a comma with and in certain cases and I know better than to argue with her.
      So, err, yeah, carry on.

Getting a bit cramped in this basement now Gary, will there be any extra gruel shoved under the door?

I often for the comma/and combination. It’s a proper thing you’re allowed to do.

As long as you know you’re doing it.

Oxford comma applies to lists of three or more items.

ie one, two, and three – correct use of Oxford comma.

        one and two – correct
        one, and two – ABOMINATION!

I’ve been noticing them everywhere today. Two of them in one story in The Times today. They weren’t lists, either.

Got a HTC Sensation? At 17? Obviously one of those looters. String him up.

It’s alright for some. Here I am with my Original Desire that I’ve put 2.3 on and it reboots in the middle of the night for no reason and there’s some kid coming on here showing off how clever he is with his ‘O’ levels and the fact that he can spell. Bloody Show-Off. In my day…

    • Nah, I saved up for it, selling my Nexus One and using Christmas money and paper round money (£19.25 p/week) to fund it.

Anyway, I live in a tiny town in the south-east of England. Not in a big city or anything. I have to get on a bus to go pretty much anywhere.

My HTC Desire some times reboots in the middle of the night too. Only started doing it since the 2.3 update. It’s not very often though.

And the music player stops playing too. Very poor show on HTC’s part.

When I bought the Desire it was a toss up between the Desire and a Sony Ericsson x10. Everyone said “buy the Desire, HTC are much better with their updates.” Well that’s the last time I listen to “everyone”.

I don’t care if it’s the same news I’ve read elsewhere.. it’s the humour Gary injects into his posts that makes me keep on coming back to Eurodroid.

(I’ll have that fiver now please. No dodgy Scottish notes either)

Don’t perpetuate the “same news” myth :(

What other sites have reported the Philip Oakley news today?

It’ll be on This is my Next tomorrow.

Sorry. Someone had to say it.
Let us not speak of this again.

Wow! didn’t realize you guys were so young, makes me feel old at 34:(
I have to agree with the other comments though, it’s the humor that keeps me a regular visitor to the site, it’s great to see a post about something I have no interest in & realizing after reading that you have no interest either, very refreshing.
whilst we’re on the subject, Why does my chrome spell check keep putting a z in realise? is that an american spelling or am I just spelling it wrong? it doesn’t look right to me with a big fat Z plonked in the middle!

P.S. Phil, where have I seen your posts before? giffgaff ot Google+ perhaps?
