Free UK national newspaper Metro continues it’s bizarre series of attacks on Android, featuring a story in its print edition today that recycles the usual Android “malware” threat reports – this time concerning the widely-reported rogue app known as “Gingermaster” that specifically targets smartphones running Android 2.3.
Here’s the story. We think this might only be in the paper as an excuse to make a Gingerbread/crumble joke:
This is the third time Metro has randomly decided to launch an attack on Android recently. It featured a front page about security issues in May and also covered similar “hacking” ground back in March.
We can only assume someone there got locked into a pretty bad contract with an HTC Magic.
Motorola’s latest flagship dual-core Android monster is a massive, original powerhouse, that’s a big improvement on previous MOTOBLUR mobiles – but still isn’t a total winner.
A slim and glamorous phone from Sony Ericsson, with the sharpest display around. It’s no powerhouse and the screen’s not the biggest out there, but we don’t mind. Because it’s cute.
LG’s first glasses-free 3D phone is a heavy, fat monster, with a clever 3D effect that works rather well. As a smartphone, though, it’s heavy and underwhelming.
A very shiny thing from Sony Ericsson, with a 3.7″ screen and Android 2.3.3 inside. But is it exciting enough to win fans in today’s spec-obsessed market? Can man live on one core alone?
INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.

/ August 25, 2011Nothing random about it. Microsoft control the media (online and tradional paper) with the enormous advertising budgets, and basically get them to print whatever they want.
for the last few years Microsoft were telling everyone to hate Sony and the PS3 (to help their struggling Xbox buisness).
Now guess what, Windows Phone 7 is struggling to gain ground, the new media enemy is Google and Android and the media seem to have laid off the Sony hate..

/ August 25, 2011If you illegally download Android applications and games from shady websites like blackdroid then you deserve to get infected by malware like this. It’s highly unlikely that any legitimate download from the Android Market would be ‘corrupted’ by hackers, as the newspaper article states, but there is a very small chance of a rogue application being submitted to the Android Market. It’s a good job really that Google seem to be much better at spotting and removing suspect applications that they used to be.
Stick to legitimate sources and you’ll be fine.
