Android main man Andy Rubin has updated our favourite statistic, revealing that Google now sees 700,000 Android devices activated every single day. The last time Google updated this data was back in mid-November, when it said 550,000 new Android phones and tablets were coming online every day.
One his Google+ page, Rubin then elaborated on the details a little further, underlining the fact that this 700,000 figure means new phones, bought and turned on the for first time – not reactivated accounts, or factory resets or multiple users:
“…and for those wondering, we count each device only once (ie, we don’t count re-sold devices), and “activations” means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service.”
We’ve been tracking this stat with joy and amazement for the last two years. Back in June it was 500,000 a day. In February it was 350,000 a day. In June of 2010 we were excited about 160,000. Android’s growth is bordering on the exponential.

INQ’s Android phone is an interesting “boutique” piece of hardware, packed with unique interface customisations that go far beyond the headline Facebook integration. We like it a lot.
