<p>A chap called Romain Guy, who&#8217;s one of the more public-facing of the many Android engineers, was given the task of creating a 1080p video clip to best show off the video recording powers of the forthcoming <a href="http://www.eurodroid.com/2011/10/19/galaxy-nexus-android-4-0-on-a-4-65-screen/">Galaxy Nexus</a>.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what he came up with, which is a longer version of the clip Google itself used in the <a href="http://www.eurodroid.com/2011/10/19/video-full-galaxy-nexus-android-4-0-launch-presentation/">Galaxy Nexus / Android 4.0 announcement presentation</a>. Be sure to pop the player out and select 1080p to see it at actual HD resolution.</p>
<p align="center"><iframe height="239" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ZhlL-ys5iOA?rel=0" frameborder="0" width="470" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></p>
<p>Obviously the clever timelapse stuff required specific hardware, with Romain attaching the Galaxy Nexus to a custom dolly, which looks like&#8230;</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics2/galaxy_nexus_timelapse_dolly.jpg"><img alt="galaxy nexus timelapse dolly" src="/pics2/galaxy_nexus_timelapse_dolly-small.jpg" width="450" height="299" /></a></p>
<p>&#8230;that. Of course, you don&#8217;t get a timelapse dolly with every phone. You can read more about Romain&#8217;s video capturing skills over on <a href="http://redirectingat.com?id=1426X523712&xs=1&url=https%3A%2F%2Fplus.google.com%2F111962077049890418486%2Fposts%2FEJxn8T21H5o&sref=rss">his Google+ page</a>.</p>

<p>So, if you see someone else being very brave and taking a good photo, don&#8217;t panic! You&#8217;ll get a copy of it too. Automatically.</p>

We&#8217;re not entirely sure what benefits this paid app brings over simply reading the web site, although perhaps it might be nice for serious fans to have easy access to podcasts on your mobile?</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s what it looks like. A bit &#8220;RSS&#8221; to be honest:</p>

</style>
<p>We&#8217;ll continue our Galaxy Ace review today, despite being quite annoyed that <a href="http://www.eurodroid.com/2011/03/samsung-galaxy-ace-review-hardware-user-interface/">yesterday&#8217;s installment</a> is currently sitting there with only one &#8220;retweet&#8221; to its name. And that was generated automatically by the system when the post was uploaded.</p>
<p>Anyway. Here&#8217;s how the Samsung Galaxy Ace performs as a web browser, plus we&#8217;ll answer the boring question about how well it runs bloody Angry Birds.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_19.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 19" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_19-small.png" width="450" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>So yes, as we expected, the only slightly weak point here is the screen resolution. Seeing a 320&#215;480 image blown up to fill a 3.5&#8243; screen results in some slightly rough text.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_20.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 20" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_20-small.png" width="225" height="337" /></a> <a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_21.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 21" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_21-small.png" width="225" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>It&#8217;s by no means a disaster or a phone-breaker, it&#8217;s just that compared with a phone running at a higher resolution text is a little harder to read. But as most Galaxy Ace buyers are likely to be trading up to this phone rather than, in our case, switching down from an HTC Desire, we doubt anyone will have an issue with it.</p>
<p><span id="more-4809"></span>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_22.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 22" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_22-small.png" width="225" height="337" /></a> <a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_23.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 23" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_23-small.png" width="225" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>Browser speed is good. Pages whizz around quickly, although we did get the odd weird scrolling glitch that would fire us to random bits of the page unexpectedly. But it was rare enough to not be an issue.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_27.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 27" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_27-small.png" width="450" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>Multitouch zooming is supported. The settings and bookmarks are your standard Android 2.2 web browser types. It works very well as a mobile browser.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_13-1.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 13" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_13-1-small.png" width="450" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>Alternate Android keyboard Swype is pre-loaded and set as the default text entry system. We&#8217;re still undecided on Swype. Some days we think it&#8217;s the best thing in the world, then the next we get stuck for AGES editing one word and wish we&#8217;d stuck with the default keyboard.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_14.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 14" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_14-small.png" width="450" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>But this is not a review of Swype.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_24.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 24" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_24-small.png" width="450" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>Oh wait, there&#8217;s another issue &#8211; no Flash Player support.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_25.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 25" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_25-small.png" width="225" height="337" /></a> <a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_26.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 26" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_26-small.png" width="225" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>We don&#8217;t really give a toss about Flash Player, to be honest, but the fact that its non-appearance means some apps will be missing from the Android Market is a pity. The average user is going to feel pretty pissed off when his brand new Android phone can&#8217;t run the BBC iPlayer services when his friend&#8217;s similar Android 2.2 phone can.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_28.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 28" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_28-small.png" width="450" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>At least Angry Birds runs well. Very well. Perfectly, in fact. If you like random physics engines, your luck&#8217;s in.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_29.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 29" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_29-small.png" width="225" height="337" /></a> <a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_30.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 30" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_30-small.png" width="225" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>GPS. Someone always asks about the GPS. It works. It took a few seconds to connect via Google Maps Navigation. Seems OK. Worked.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_31.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 31" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_31-small.png" width="225" height="337" /></a> <a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_32.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 32" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_32-small.png" width="225" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>General app performance was fine. We didn&#8217;t notice any lock-ups or significant glitches while using the thing. Solid phone.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_33.png"><img alt="samsung galaxy ace review 33" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/samsung_galaxy_ace_review_33-small.png" width="450" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>Anyway. That&#8217;s enough screenshots and half-baked opinions for today. We&#8217;re running out of words. Tomorrow we&#8217;ll look at the Galaxy Ace&#8217;s camera and maybe finish it off with some sort of coherent conclusion.</p>

<p>So here&#8217;s what Sony Ericsson&#8217;s latest Android phone camera is capable of producing, courtesy of <a href="http://redirectingat.com?id=1426X523712&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Fjohnkarakatsanis%2Fsets%2F72157625761318039%2F&sref=rss">a sample set uploaded to Flickr</a>. <p>We&#8217;ll continue our <a href="http://www.eurodroid.com/2010/10/review-acer-stream-user-interface/">Acer Stream review</a> with a look at the Android phone&#8217;s camera. The lens round the back of the Acer Stream is rated as a 5megapixel model, capable of recording video at 720p resolution. Results are OK! Here&#8217;s a collection of photos taken on the Stream &#8211; click on the image to see the uncompressed originals.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/2010-10-1314.02.19-1.jpg"><img alt="2010-10-13 14.02" src="/pics/2010-10-1314.02.19-small-1.jpg" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>Pictures at the highest setting are captured at 2592&#215;1944 resolution, resulting in some vast 3MB files sitting on your SD card. Colours are good, but detail isn&#8217;t great when viewing them at original size.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/2010-10-1314.01.04-1.jpg"><img alt="2010-10-13 14.01" src="/pics/2010-10-1314.01.04-small-1.jpg" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>Marco mode is the star, producing great results. These made great jam, too.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/2010-10-1314.09.33.jpg"><img alt="2010-10-13 14.09" src="/pics/2010-10-1314.09.33-small-1.jpg" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>Took this cow&#8217;s photo time and time again, but she refused to smile.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/2010-10-1314.11.47.jpg"><img alt="2010-10-13 14.11" src="/pics/2010-10-1314.11.47-small-1.jpg" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>We&#8217;d happily use the Acer Stream as a replacement camera. Shots aren&#8217;t anything special, but are still better than we were expecting.</p>

<p>Well, actually the flash isn&#8217;t demonstrated in the test shots, as they&#8217;ve all been taken outside in the sort of bright light that&#8217;s perfect for showing off cameras. But still. Here&#8217;s what your shots will look like, should you go for an XT720 as your next Android phone and be fond of nature photography:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="/pics/motorola_milestone_xt720_photo_sample_1.jpg"><img src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/motorola_milestone_xt720_photo_sample_1-small.jpg" alt="motorola milestone xt720 photo sample 1" width="225" height="126" /></a> <a href="/pics/motorola_milestone_xt720_photo_sample_2.jpg"><img src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/motorola_milestone_xt720_photo_sample_2-small.jpg" alt="motorola milestone xt720 photo sample 2" width="225" height="126" /></a></p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Lovely, especially the beetle shot &#8211; a good macro mode would be an excellent selling point for the camera geeks. <p>Here we are then &#8211; D-Day for mobile phone cameras. Sony Ericsson has squeezed a staggering 8megapixel digital sensor into its <a href="http://www.eurodroid.com/2010/01/video-sony-xperia-x10-shown-off-at-ces/">imminent</a> <a href="http://redirectingat.com?id=1426X523712&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sonyericsson.com%2Fcws%2Fproducts%2Fmobilephones%2Foverview%2Fxperiax10&sref=rss">X10 Android phone</a>, and will be marketing it as THE phone for sociable people who don&#8217;t want to compromise on picture quality.</p>
<p>So that&#8217;s the bluster. But what are the photos produced by the X10 actually LIKE? They are like this&#8230;</p>
<p><a href="/pics/sony_ericsson_x10_photo_camera-samples_3.jpg"><img src="/pics/sony_ericsson_x10_photo_camera-samples_3-small.jpg" alt="sony ericsson x10 photo camera-samples 3" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>Very, very nice. The blue sky is BLUE &#8211; not the usual odd mixture of blotchy, jagged purple pixels and glowing artifacts you get when pointing most cameraphones at the sky.</p>
<p><a href="/pics/sony_ericsson_x10_photo_camera-samples_2.jpg"><img src="/pics/sony_ericsson_x10_photo_camera-samples_2-small.jpg" alt="sony ericsson x10 photo camera-samples 2" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>Another great shot. Background detail is perhaps a little blotchy, but this is still by far the best output we&#8217;ve yet seen from an Android phone. Lovely colours. Well done Sony Ericsson and Mother Nature.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE: </strong><br />
Some photos taken using an Xperia X10 during the tricky &#8220;night&#8221; period can be found <a href="http://redirectingat.com?id=1426X523712&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fblogs.sonyericsson.com%2Fproducts%2F2009%2F12%2F08%2Fxperia-pureness-hits-the-store-in-sweden%2F&sref=rss">on Sony Ericsson&#8217;s blog</a>. Thanks to readers Stephen and Tom for the heads-up.</p>
<p><span id="more-627"></span></p>
<p><a href="/pics/sony_ericsson_x10_photo_camera-samples_4.jpg"><img src="/pics/sony_ericsson_x10_photo_camera-samples_4-small.jpg" alt="sony ericsson x10 photo camera-samples 4" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>This sort of shot is always the toughest challenge for a camera &#8211; separating light areas from dark. And the X10 pulls it off superbly well. Incidentally, the photographer also has a good eye for a shot and lives in a very pretty place.</p>
<p><a href="/pics/sony_ericsson_x10_photo_camera-samples_1.jpg"><img src="/pics/sony_ericsson_x10_photo_camera-samples_1-small.jpg" alt="sony ericsson x10 photo camera-samples 1" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>The X10 even copes admirably with the always difficult &#8220;Photo of the reviewer&#8217;s desk&#8221; shot. Some great detail there and the X10 manages well in slightly dodgy internal lighting conditions. Looks like Sony Ericsson has CRACKED IT when it comes to squeezing camera tech into a phone.</p>
<p><strong>SO CAN THE X10 REPLACE MY CAMERA?</strong><br />
Finally, yes, we have a mobile phone that could quite happily also be your &#8220;main&#8221; camera without embarrassing you when you come to share the results.</p>

<p>The Motorola CLIQ, which we call the DEXT in Europe and is available in the UK exclusively <a href="http://redirectingat.com?id=1426X523712&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.orange.co.uk%2Fmobile-phones%2Fmotorola-dext&sref=rss">through Orange</a>, is Motorola&#8217;s first Android phone, predating the DROID/Milestone. It comes with Motorola&#8217;s MOTOBLUR smeared over the top of Android, in case Google&#8217;s seamless integration of social networking stuff isn&#8217;t good enough, plus there&#8217;s an impressive 5megapixel camera round the back.</p>
<p>The CLIQ/DEXT is also more curvaceous and prettier than the bizarrely fashionable DROID/Milestone to our eyes, although it&#8217;s currently lumbered with Android 1.5 &#8211; but <a href="http://redirectingat.com?id=1426X523712&xs=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fdiscuss.gdgt.com%2Fmotorola%2Fcliq%2Fgeneral%2FAndroid-1-6-or-better-for-the-Cliq-sometime-soon%2F&sref=rss">internet chatter suggests</a> the DEXT may get updated to Android 1.6 soon.</p>
<p>But anyway, what we want to know is&#8230; IS THE CAMERA ANY GOOD?</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/motorola_cliq_picture_sample_3.jpg"><img alt="motorola cliq picture sample 3" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/motorola_cliq_picture_sample_3-small.jpg" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>That&#8217;s a literally unbelievably good shot from the Motorola CLIQ/DEXT. OK, so this sort of bright, sunny, angular American cityscape isn&#8217;t exactly challenging for a digital camera, but the colour reproduction here is definitely the best we&#8217;ve seen from an Android device.</p>
<p>Well done to all at Motorola, or whichever Chinese wholesaler you bought the lenses and sensors off.</p>
<p><span id="more-432"></span>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/motorola_cliq_picture_sample_2.jpg"><img alt="motorola cliq picture sample 2" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/motorola_cliq_picture_sample_2-small.jpg" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>Another clear and sharp shot from the CLIQ/DEXT. There&#8217;s little purple-fringing visible even on those often tricky shiny surfaces, and the geometry is sharp &#8211; there&#8217;s only the slightest hint of barrel distortion on that top black section. Good work.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/motorola_cliq_picture_sample_1.jpg"><img alt="motorola cliq picture sample 1" src="http://www.eurodroid.com/pics/motorola_cliq_picture_sample_1-small.jpg" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>This one&#8217;s not so good, but until they start putting macro modes into mobile phones you&#8217;re never going to get a good close-up of something as small and round as an AA battery out of a phone. Trust me. I have experience in this field.</p>

<p>Ahh, the <a href="http://www.eurodroid.com/2009/12/uk-retailer-play-com-stocking-the-motorola-milestone-and-acer-liquid-a1-from-december-21/">Acer A1</a>. Looks a bit chunky, runs a marginally customised version of Android 1.6 and boasts a whopping great 3.5&#8243; touchscreen running at 480 x 800. The phone was reviewed well by most outlets, although we&#8217;re yet to actually see one in the flesh so can&#8217;t even pretend to have an opinion on it.</p>
<p>BUT! What we can do is dig up some example photos taken by the Liquid A1, then attempt to see if they&#8217;re any good or not, as we add it to our Android <a href="http://www.eurodroid.com/category/pic-samples/">Photo Sample MEGA-DATABASE</a>.</p>
<p>So, here we go.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/acer_liquid_a1_camera_sample_1.jpg"><img alt="acer liquid a1 camera sample 1" src="/pics/acer_liquid_a1_camera_sample_1-small.jpg" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>That&#8217;s&#8230; terrible work by the Acer&#8217;s camera. Click the photo to see the big version and you&#8217;ll notice the colours are awful and virtually non-existent, everything&#8217;s blotchy and&#8230; what&#8217;s with the general aura of fogginess?</p>
<p><span id="more-413"></span>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/acer_liquid_a1_camera_sample_2.jpg"><img alt="acer liquid a1 camera sample 2" src="/pics/acer_liquid_a1_camera_sample_2-small.jpg" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>For some reason, even though the A1&#8242;s new <a href="http://www.eurodroid.com/2009/12/uk-retailer-play-com-stocking-the-motorola-milestone-and-acer-liquid-a1-from-december-21/">and only just came out</a>, the phone&#8217;s lacking a flash on its camera, so don&#8217;t go expecting any miracles to happen in low-light situations.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="/pics/acer_liquid_a1_camera_sample_3.jpg"><img alt="acer liquid a1 camera sample 3" src="/pics/acer_liquid_a1_camera_sample_3-small.jpg" width="450" height="337" /></a></p>
<p>This one&#8217;s OK! If you&#8217;re looking for a phone camera that can just about recreate a scene if the lighting&#8217;s ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, the A1&#8242;s your phone. Such a shame the camera&#8217;s not much cop, as the phone itself looks lovely.</p>
